Provides services to crime victims and witnesses involved in the criminal justice process. Services Include: Assistance with applying to New York State Crime Victims Board for compensation; Information on your role in the criminal justice process and the significant stages of the process; Assistance with security measures to help protect your safety; Court information and case information. This includes explaining each step of the proceeding in order to help alleviate confusion and the resulting anxiety. Additionally court dates, times and places can be confirmed along with information on what to expect when you get there; Court accompaniment. If desired, a staff member of the Victim Services Unit will accompany the victim or witness to hearings and trial in order to provide support; Assistance with Property Return; Intervention with creditors and employers; Referrals to any social services you may need and Assistance with post-conviction proceedings, including the preparation of a Victim Impact Statement if a pre-sentence report is prepared in the case; speaking at the time of sentencing for felony offenses; and notifications regarding the defendant's parole or release from a correctional facility. Provides substantial financial relief to victims of crime and their families by paying unreimbursed crime-related expenses, including but not limited to: medical and burial expenses, loss of earnings or support, counseling costs, crime scene clean-up expenses, the cost to repair or replace items of essential personal property, reasonable court transportation expenses, assistance to crime victims acting as a good Samaritan, the cost of residing at or utilizing the services of a domestic violence shelter, and limited attorney fees.
Created under Article 22 of the New York State Executive Law to compensate innocent victims of crime for unreimbursed out of pocket expenses, including medical and counseling expenses, funeral expenses, loss of earnings or support, the cost to repair or replace items of essential personal property, reasonable court/medical transportation expenses, occupational/vocational rehabilitation, and the cost of residing at or utilizing the services of a domestic violence shelter. Provides federal funds to support victim compensation and assistance programs across the Nation. Also provides training for diverse professionals who work with victims, develops and disseminates publications, supports projects to enhance victims' rights and services, and educates the public about victim issues.
Provides crisis intervention and support services to victims of violent crime. Links victims of crime to reimbursement for medical and essential property loss expenses. Offers individual and group counseling, legal and medical information, criminal justice advocacy including medical and courtroom accompaniment and post sentencing support. Victims of crime may be eligible for benefits with the NYS Crime Victims Board CVB under certain circumstances including those who were physically injured as a result of a crime, children under 18, elderly 60 or over, disabled, the surviving spouse, parent, grandparent, stepparent, stepchild, child, or person dependent upon the victim who dies as a result of a crime, or the person who paid or incurred the burial expense of an innocent victim who died as a direct result of a crime limited to burial expenses only.
