Provides a legal helpline where callers can get information or referrals for legal issues, also some calls will be forwarded to an attorney who will call back. Also qualifying Westchester residents may be referred to a moderate means panel of attorneys for representation who have reduced or sliding scale fees.
Help veterans obtain disability (and thus, often, health care) benefits and apply for discharge upgrades. Students may help veterans submit disability claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs, work on appeals of denied claims, and help veterans obtain increases in disability ratings, for cases in which increases are justified by a veteran’s service record and health status. Students also may help veterans upgrade other-than-honorable discharges from the military so that these veterans become eligible for disability and health care benefits. Working alongside physicians, other clinicians and experienced attorneys, students help veterans with service-connected disabilities establish that their disabling conditions are service-connected. Offers free limited legal advice and assistance on topics including child support, custody, divorce, domestic violence, school discipline, education services, foreclosure, bankruptcy, consumer protection, debt collection, housing, immigration, public benefits, social security, health insurance, criminal records and more. These services are provided free of charge by the following agencies: Community Legal Advocates of New York, Empire Justice Center, Liberty Defense Project, Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County, Long Island Advocacy Center, Nassau Suffolk Law Services, Suffolk County Bar Association, and Touro Law Center.
Provides a safe home for women and single mothers ages 18-35 years of age and survivors of sexual exploitation. The Home accompanies these women in their own process through counseling, parenting skills, preparation for independent living, educational assistance, health guidance services, referral to legal services and other identified needs.
At Legal Hand, trained non-lawyer community volunteers provide free legal information, assistance, and referrals to help resolve issues that affect individuals, in areas like employment, housing, family, immigration, domestic violence, and benefits, and prevent problems from turning into legal cases.
