Offers an award winning educational program which invites Suffolk County residents to receive specialized training given at their Police Academy for the purpose of bringing the Police Department and the community closer together. It opens up the lines of communication and builds trust between the police and the community. The Civilian Academy dispels misconceptions as to how the Police Department operates and lets the public have a better understanding of what their police can and cannot do. There is NO physical component to the program. The Civilian Academy is a total of 48 hours long. There are 16 sessions, one session per week. Each class is approx. three hours long, starting at 6:30PM and ending at 9:30PM. One Academy is run each year. The Civilian Academy typically starts in early March, ending in June. Classes are held on various topics including Laws of Arrest, Search and Seizure, Use of Force, Traffic Enforcement, Domestic Violence, Narcotics and Homicide Investigations, Bias Crimes, as well as other topics. Additionally, students have the option of riding along with Police Officers from their local precinct for a tour of duty and attending a demonstration at the Police Firearms Range & Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (E.V.O.C.). These daily interactions with community residents, local businesses, as well as the faith-based leaders of our community are the cornerstone to effective communication and lasting partnerships. Community involvement is essential to our mission of providing effective, bias free policing to our residents. The Seventh Precinct wants to be aware of the problems facing our community in order to help to resolve them in an efficient manner. The best resolution comes from an empowered community. Provides patrol and other police service to the Town of Babylon. The officers of the First Precinct are assigned to a wide variety of tasks including community policing, motor patrol, gang enforcement, school resource officers, and quality of life enhancement. Our COPE and CSU officers work on quality of life issues ranging from traffic problems to drug complaints. The precinct commanding officer hosts a precinct wide community meeting on the first Thursday of each month. The meeting is at the West Babylon Library and starts at 7:00. At the meeting, you will be provided with crime stats for each community served by the precinct. Community members are also invited to express their concerns at the meeting. In addition, we collaborate with numerous community and civic groups within our precinct through our COPE Unit, Community Liaison Officer, and our monthly community meetings. Provides patrol and other police service to the southern portion of Brookhaven Town, the eastern portion of Islip Town, and the incorporated villages of Patchogue and Bellport. The 5th Precinct hosts an open community meeting the 2nd Tuesday of every month (with the exceptions of July and August). The COPE Unit is tasked with addressing various community concerns, including traffic complaints and quality of life issues. The Community Liaison Officer (CLO) is assigned to the Community Relations Bureau and works in conjunction with the COPE Unit to address community concerns. COPE officers and the CLO regularly communicate with local community groups and attend local community meetings to spread public safety news and messages. Collaborative efforts to develop a community healing plan to address the trauma in the relationship between residents and law enforcement
Brings together people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet and get to know each other through small group deliberation and dialogue that promotes racial and social justice. Offers a school exchange program that matches students at seven Syracuse city schools with those attending seven suburban high schools and middle schools to participate in facilitated dialogue sessions that aim to break down racial and ethnic stereotypes and build bridges of understanding.
