Volunteers in NASSAU COUNTY FAMILY COURT ADVOCATE (Hempstead) program advocate for children in foster care by making home visits, interviewing children and reporting findings to family court judges. Training in the laws and procedures surrounding the foster care system is provided. Three to five hours per week, flexible times. Request a 1 year commitment. Volunteers may be 21 years or older, Adults. Volunteers in MEDIATION ALTERNATIVE PROJECT (Hempstead) are trained in conflict resolution in order to mediate between disputing parties and facilitate a dialog towards the peaceful resolution of the dispute. Advanced mediators may be offered training in specialized areas, such as CUSTODY AND VISITATION cases, Lemon Law arbitration, Special Education mediation. A 25-hour mediation training is required plus additional 6 hours of continuing education per year in order to remain certified. Volunteers must be able to mediate effectively, neutrally and confidentially with sensitivity and diversity awareness. Mediators are required to be available to mediate every month and must be 21 years or older. Volunteers in SENIOR RESPITE PROGRAM (Hempstead) provide in-home companionship and supervision to frail elderly family persons while relieving the primary caregiver for a regular weekly break (no personal care or administering medication involved). 12 hour training. Flexible times. Request minimum commitment of 2-4 hours per week.
