Provides language support through practical, conversational English language instruction at accessible times and locations, including the Hope Refugee Drop-In Center and local libraries. Small learning groups are also hosted at students' homes, co-taught by a pair of volunteers. Classes take place multiple times a week and cover a number of conversational, English "life skills" topics identified by the students themselves. Citizenship and literacy classes are offered for individuals who cannot read and write in their first language or in English.
Program combines case management and career counseling to ensure that refugee households struggling to achieve economic self-sufficiency during their first six months in the US do not succumb to homelessness, hunger, and/or long-term poverty. Connects refugees to basic needs service providers and employers in order to minimize income vulnerability and attain economic self-sufficiency at the end of the federally mandated resettlement period. Works with the Adult Education Division of Buffalo Public Schools to provide free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes to refugees ages 21 and older. Incorporates financial literacy coaching and training into our career services to provide clients with the tools they need for economic advancement and a bright future.
