EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT – BASIC) | NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Offers a program in partnership with the Nassau County Emergency Medical Services Academy. This program is the approved New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) course which will prepare you to become a certified EMT. During 132 hours of class, students will complete the American Heart Association CPR course. In addition to classroom training, students must complete a clinical experience of 10 hours in an emergency room of a local hospital and may have an opportunity for a ride-along. Students must also complete three on-line classes, provided free of charge by FEMA. To qualify for the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) certifying exam, students must attend all classes, complete all assignments, have a clear (no felonies) background check and pass the final written exam and practical skills exam. Students who pass the NYS exam will receive Emergency Medical Technician certification from NYSDOH to perform emergency care for and transportation of injured or ill patients. Medical supplies are additional. Student must be 17 years of age by the written exam date. ADVENTURE CAMP | FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE-FUTURE STARS SUMMER CAMPS

Offers an exciting program for campers in grades 5-10 (co-ed), incorporating both on-campus, and off-campus activities. The program is modeled on the popular Adventure Education programs that are being featured more frequently in school curriculums across the country. MATHEMATICS SUMMER PROGRAM | STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY

Offers a summer program designed for students who will be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year in high school and who have an interest in enriching their mathematics education. During the one-week program students will explore several branches of mathematics, including: Knot Theory; Number Theory; The mathematics of puzzles and games; Cryptography; how public-key cryptography works and how to create your own codes; An introduction to the mathematics of finance and Statistics for the Biological Sciences. Students will attend lectures about topics in mathematics from experts in the field and will work on projects that will further their understanding of the topic. In addition, there will be fun and games with mathematics. You will be exposed to advanced subjects that you won't see in school. You will interact with students from other schools who are also fascinated by math. You will get to know professors on a one-on-one basis. And, most of all, you will have fun! HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY | EASTERN CAMPUS

Students will participate in online instruction to develop career skills for the Health IT workforce. The Health IT online program is approximately 140-hours of online instruction that includes instruction, simulations, a Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Exam Review and job preparation and career coaching. In addition, students will earn a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification and participate in a 30-hour externship in a medical facility. Students will learn the practical knowledge and skills required to fill the Health IT roles in a variety of health care settings. Students will be introduced to eClinics, an electronic health record practice management software system used in the medical field. Upon successful completion of the program, students will take the certification exam administered by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). This exam will allow the student to become a Certified Associate in Health Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS). Call for more detailed information.

Dedicated to providing a lively and intellectually challenging array of non-credit courses taught year-round in a university setting by other OLLI members. The program currently offers social and cultural enrichment through thought-provoking workshops per semester and a variety of exciting day-trips. OLLI members come from all walks of life and career paths and is open to retired and semi-retired individuals aged 50 or older regardless of their level of education or career experience, who are interested in a diverse learning environment that fosters mutual sharing of ideas, life experiences and the love of learning. There are no tests, no grades and no pre-requisites to join. OLLI workshops cover every possible genre you can imagine and are led by current OLLI members who volunteer their time. New workshops are always being considered and many are inspired by members of OLLI. There are many avenues for participation in OLLI aside from taking workshops. We encourage members to join one of our many committees, teach a workshop or attend one of our special event trips or lecture series. There is a membership fee for this program. MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID | NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Offers a program in Mental Health First Aid. Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is assistance provided to a person (youth or adult) exhibiting a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves. People who enroll in local Mental Health First Aid courses will be taught a five-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors, and others cope with mental health or substance use problems. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool. It improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems. The Mental Health First Aid certification course is open to students ages 18 and over. Students must complete a two-hour online pre-work activity which will be followed by an instructor-led remote virtual class via Zoom video conferencing. Each student will have access to a downloadable text, Mental Health First Aid. Students who successfully complete the course will receive their Mental Health First Aid certification.
