Erie County Sheriff's Office - Domestic Violence Unit

Provides crisis intervention and support for victims of family violence, elder abuse, rape, and sexual assault. Offers safe, confidential services including counseling, safety-planning, court advocacy, and referrals. Also provides comprehensive domestic violence, sexual assault, teen dating violence, elder abuse, and bullying prevention programs available for schools, community groups, women's groups, scouting troops, and other interested groups.

ANTI-BULLYING INITIATIVE IN DUTCHESS COUNTY | MEDIATION CENTER OF DUTCHESS COUNTY

The Anti-Bullying Initiative is designed to raise awareness, prevent and reduce bullying. It provides youth with opportunities to learn about bullying and how to respond to prevent and decrease bullying in their schools.

FRIENDS FROM SUNSHINE CENTER CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAM | SUNSHINE PREVENTION CENTER FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES

Teaches children, in grades K-3, character education and social skills through directed lessons, songs, multi-cultural puppets, stories and activities. Cultural diversity, anger management, conflict resolution, strategies for dealing with bullies and the understanding of emotions are some of the issues that are addressed. Training, in the areas of alcohol, drugs and violence prevention is available. This program is available to schools and agencies.

SANDY HOOK PROMISE "START WITH HELLO" | RIVERHEAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. With activities and curricula available for all ages, students are empowered to end social isolation in three easy steps: See Someone Alone -- Step 1: Learn how to recognize the signs of loneliness and social isolation; Reach Out And Help -- Step 2: Find out what you can do to help others feel included and Start With Hello -- Step 3: Discover how to break the ice and strike up a conversation. SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS | SUNSHINE PREVENTION CENTER FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES

Offers workshop for children ages 5-8 and 9-12 (parents included). This program provides education and support to families. Topics include building healthy friendships, communication skills, understanding and expressing feelings, dealing with teasing and bullies, and more. Discussion groups, creative arts, games and hands-on activities are utilized to increase understanding and strengthen social skills. The Parent Component offers support and guidance to parents, and provides practical skills for helping their child in a variety of situations. The Parent Component meets at the same time the children's program runs.

SANDY HOOK PROMISE "SAY SOMETHING" | RIVERHEAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Teaches students how to look for warning signs, signals, and threats, especially in social media, of an individual who may be a threat to themselves or others and to say something to a trusted adult to get help. We want to teach students to understand and recognize warning signs and threats, how to act immediately, take it seriously, understand strategies to take action, and overcome potential barriers to being an “upstander” rather than a “bystander." Ultimately, the student is taught to seek out a trusted adult. Contact the Community Relations Office to have this program offered at your school.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNIT | YAPHANK CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. Offers an experiential learning, bullying prevention program where students are given opportunities to diffuse situations, create new skills using positive behaviors and work together to create a cohesive community.

CREATIVE RESPONSE TO CONFLICT | CREATIVE RESPONSE TO CONFLICT

Conducts a variety of workshops for people of all ages. School-based workshops include staff development workshops, in-classroom workshop, bias awareness, bullying, problem solving, and a three-day peer mediation training workshop for students. Community-based workshops are conducted for community, organizations, hospitals, and religious organizations that work with children and young adults. Conflict Resolution for Facilitators Workshop provides participants with conflict resolution training skills. Nurturing Inclusive Community Environment (NICE) is an emotional support program designed to end school violence and encourage academic success in a safe, peaceful learning environment. The CRC Elder Concerns gives support in the decision making process regarding health concerns and the transition to assisted living or nursing homes. Other services are also available, such as in-service course credits, mediation services, response to bullying workshops, a leadership and social justice day camp, LGBTQ workshops, and a re-entry support program for formerly incarcerated parents and their children.
