PROJECT VETERANS' INDEPENDENCE | PROJECT VETERANS' INDEPENDENCE

Project Veterans' Independence is a Catholic Charities program partnership with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Our goal is to place homeless veterans into permanent housing and help them live independently within their communities while offering counseling and access to support services. Supportive case management, peer-to-peer support groups and crisis intervention services are available to all clients.

SIBLING SUPPORT | BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF LONG ISLAND

Specializes in working with children who have a brother or sister with special needs. Adult volunteer mentors give these children special one-on-one attention in a one-to-one, professionally supported relationship, monitored by dedicated case manager. Volunteers are screened and trained. Also match the special needs children with volunteers whenever appropriate.

HOFSTRA REACH PROGRAM | HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY SUMMER CAMP

Offers a fully inclusive program that offers campers with special needs an opportunity to participate in all activities at Hofstra Summer Camp with their peers. For campers entering 2-5 grade, morning will be in a specialty program of choice and the afternoon will be spent in recreation activities with a peer group of 8-10 campers of the same grade and gender. For campers entering 6-10 grade, mornings will be spent in recreation activities with a peer group of 8-10 campers of the same grade and the afternoon will be spent in a specialty program of choice. Recreational activities are fully inclusive and provide campers with special needs the opportunity to engage and interact with their peers while participating in recreational sports and activities, outdoor/ indoor games, lunch and swim. The REACH Program provides a safe and positive environment for campers with disabilities to participate in Specialty Camps/Learning Institute activities with their peers. In this inclusion model, they enjoy playing games, completing projects and other peer interactions. Campers in the REACH program may receive visual supports and/or modifications when necessary, under the supervision of the REACH director. Campers in the REACH program may also receive 1:1 support from a capable, hard- working volunteer high school student to help them navigate the camp schedule.

NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR RARE DISORDERS | NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR RARE DISORDERS

Acts as a clearinghouse and referral service for information on rare diseases. Maintains a comprehensive rare disease database, which provides families with information on over 1,100 rare disorders. Its networking program links families with other families who are afflicted with similar disorders. Accumulates and disseminates information about orphan drugs and devices, making known their availability. Advocates the needs of people with rare disorders. Provides disease specific medical reports written in lay language. Also offers a Medication Assistance Program for specific drugs and a medical equipment exchange program. STONY BROOK/EASTERN SUFFOLK BOCES PSYCHIATRIC PROGRAM | TECUMSEH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT STONY BROOK HOSPITAL

Provides an inpatient psychiatry program for elementary-age students enabling them to continue their education while undergoing psychiatric treatment. Students are referred through parent or school referrals and admits youngsters, after thorough evaluation by social worker, psychologists and physicians. The length of stay ranges from 1-12 weeks, during which time a full academic curriculum is provided by Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

PARENTS TIME OFF | PARENTS TIME OFF

Offers monthly 4 hour respite for children with disabilities and their siblings enrolled in program. Parents drop off their children, who are cared for by Director of LITLC, students from Lynbrook High School, and other communities. Program includes dinner, crafts, music, and playtime.

LEARNING TO LEARN CENTER | NORTH SHORE CHILD AND FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTER ADMINISTRATIVE HEADQUARTERS

Provides a range of specialized assessments and evaluations of developmental, learning, neurologic and psychiatric issues in children, adolescents, and young adults. Serves any child ages preschool through young adult who is struggling academically and/or experiencing emotional or behavioral problems related to a neuropsychological deficit. Parent and professional education workshops are offered by North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center staff who have expertise in child development and neuropsychology. Offers school consultation to help educators work with children with neuropsychological deficits more effectively.
