Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. An outreach program that focuses on the Latina community, and to help those who are victims of domestic violence to get the help and support they need, including follow-up services.

Enforces animal control measures needed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Islip residents and, wherever possible, to promote animal welfare. The shelter houses stray and abandoned animals and makes every effort to have as many of those animals adopted as is possible.

Provides information in various formats, including online resources, about treatments, research, support. Also offers referrals available resources and services for individuals with spinal cord injury and their families.

Provides training and education programs to the community through workshops and seminars on human sexuality. Goals include strengthening parent-child communication skills, educating adolescents about sexual decision making and responsibility, and providing prevention education on a broad spectrum of health problems, including AIDS.

Provides community outreach centers throughout the county to meets the needs of individuals and families in need. Each center provides basic needs services along with benefits assistance. Services include food pantries, emergency housing assistance, family services to promote self-reliance and prevent future crisis. HEAP application assistance. Coordinates Medical Transportation.

Offers various formats to educate and help people understand AIDS/HIV, and to break the stereotypes of the disease, and what resources are available in the community to access HIV testing services.

Provides information, referral and outreach services for seniors in the county, for services, support and resources that are available for their needs.

Identifies unserved and underserved children and adults and connects them with generic and specialized services. Bilingual staff is available to work with Hispanic families.

Provides information on HIV/AIDS and its prevention to community members, schools, and professionals through workshops and individual conferences. Makes referrals to appropriate agencies, and provides training through a faith-based initiative.

MICHC will provide education, outreach, home visitation, referrals and follow-up to improve the general health and well-being of women and infants, with a focus on family planning and self-sufficiency. The program will engage women and link families to health and other supportive services in the targeted communities of Newburgh, Middletown and Port Jervis.

Promotes business through member services, educational programs, cooperative programs and legislative advocacy that balances prosperity with the quality of life in the community. Maintains a community calendar of community events. Also posts job openings within the community, on the website.

Offers over 26 outreach programs to the local community. Ministries include youth outreach for children 8-16 years of age, academic enhancement which includes tutorial program, homework assistance, computer and study workshops.

Provides a food pantry for Veterans, the Military and their families, and families in need. LI Cares hosts Military Appreciation Tuesdays in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, and Freeport which gives veterans and their families access to food, personal care items, household products, pet food, and school supplies. Also veterans are provided with information and resources pertaining to veteran special benefits. LI Cares also operates a Mobile Pantry which delivers nutritious groceries to homebound, disabled veterans unable to access their local pantries.

Provides education and training of drug and alcohol counselors and offers education to the general public on topics such as parenting, depression, racism, mental health and homophobia. Appointment required. Serves all age groups.

Offers social and educational programs, dancing, arts and crafts instruction, exercise, parties and guest speakers.

An online resource guide and information service for persons formerly incarcerated, those working through probation or parole, and others similarly in need.

An outreach program to help improve and maintain personal health and environmental living conditions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. If environmental health hazards or problems do exist, our staff will direct them to the agency best able to help.

Offers education and public awareness about AIDS/HIV and sexually transmitted disease, designed specifically for teenagers and young adults, also give information and referrals to resources such as HIV testing and counseling.

Provides diabetes education for individuals and their families in Suffolk County Health Centers and in the community. Classes are offered at various locations throughout the county, during day and evening, to promote self-management of diabetes and weight management in efforts to prevent or delay the complications associated with diabetes.
