Operates several Extreme Weather Centers for anyone who needs to get out of the elements on days of extreme weather. Nassau County has many services available to help residents during extreme weather conditions to ensure no one is left out in the cold or extreme heat. Warming Centers and Cooling Centers facilities are opened as needed at various locations throughout Nassau County. Call for detailed information regarding facility locations and times.

Provide daytime or evening access to heated facilities during times of extreme cold for people who are temporarily at risk for exposure due to a power failure, fuel shortage, road closure, homelessness or other situations which make them vulnerable. Code Blue warming site is activated when the windchill and/or temperature reaches 15*F or below. Law Enforcement agencies or any other organizations that come in contact with or becomes aware of any individuals that are in need of sheltering can bring them to the warming center. NRD provides a location for people during extreme heat who have no air conditioning or have a power shut down due to a heat wave.

An overnight shelter with dinner and a cot from 8:30 pm-6:00 am. Also, a warming center at a nearby location from 6:30 am-2:30 pm.

Offers a list of facilities that may be activated as Warming Facilities during an Excessive Cold Event as determined by the National Weather Service for Suffolk County. During excessive cold conditions, review the operating hours and call before you go to make sure the location is open.

Maintains a comprehensive database of Health and Human Service agencies and programs and also functions as one of the primary sources which links these services to the providers in the community, including disaster or weather related or information, such as road and bridge closures or other problems caused by the weather or other natural disasters.

Assists individuals in growing and investing in their communities by providing lending capital, training, consulting, technical assistance, seminars, workshops, and low-cost business rental space to new and existing businesses that would otherwise lack access to these services. Assists area residents in developing asset based thinking by providing financial literacy training, basic budgeting, and home appliance loans to combat predatory lenders. Loan programs and Cottage Industry Assistance Program target low to moderate income existing and prospective individuals. Chautauqua Microenterprise Loan Fund and the Women and Minority Microenterprise Loan Fund Programs help small businesses by providing small business start up and expansion loans. The small business incubator offers small businesses an opportunity to grow and stabilize with subsidies around rent, business services, and technical assistance.
