Preserves the history of the 14th Regiment New York State Militia and the American Civil War. Living history presentations are done at schools, historical societies, museums, parades and other events. Sets up a camp that resembles one from the Civil War, does drill and firing exhibitions and runs through a brief drill using wooden muskets. Restores grave sites of the Veterans of the 14th Regiment N.Y.S.M. All presentations are given in full civil war uniform.

Preserve also offers 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding (by annual permit), cross country skiing and nature trails, as well as fly fishing (with permit). The 32 mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the preserve. A museum and gift shop are also part of the preserve.
