Manages more than 70 parks, preserves, museums, historic properties, and athletic facilities comprising 6,000 acres throughout the county. Parks include "active" parks, which are large and offer diverse activities, are heavily used by the public, and have full-time, on-site staff; and "passive" parks, which are far smaller and limited to local usage, in many cases consisting of a single athletic field, small lake or grassy area. Generally, active parks are open from early morning until dusk, with late hours in the summer and later hours for particular winter activities such as ice skating.
