Offers a voluntary developmental evaluation and services program offered by New York State and administered locally by the Nassau County Department of Health Office for Children with Special Needs. To be eligible for EI services, children must be under 3 years of age and have a confirmed disability or established developmental delay, as defined by New York State, in one or more of the following areas of development: physical, cognitive, communication, social-emotional, and/or adaptive. Evaluations are conducted to determine eligibility. A variety of therapeutic and support services are offered to eligible infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. Major provisions of the program include: Identification and referral of children at risk or suspected of disability by primary referral sources; Periodic developmental screening and tracking of at risk children; Service coordination for eligible children and families; A multidisciplinary evaluation provided at no cost to parents to determine eligibility; Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) for eligible children and families; Provision of early intervention services in the IFSP at no cost to parents and Delivery of services in natural settings in the community where children of the same age are typically found, to the maximum extent appropriate. Children with diagnosed disabilities and developmental delays are educated with typically developing peers in affiliation with childcare program. Provides comprehensive educational services for 3 to 5 year-old students with multiple physical and developmental disabilities. The educational curriculum and therapeutic design of the program focuses on skill development through traditional teaching methods while engaging the most up to date technologies available. Classroom activities stress academic and readiness skills, social and play skills. Experiential learning through exploration, manipulation, imitation, and socialization are keys to successful skill acquisition. A cross-disciplinary approach allows for classroom activities that develop the skills necessary for day-to-day life. Communication skills are reinforced throughout the school day in an engineered aided language environment, which uses visual strategies and state of the art assistive technology enabling students to make their needs known in each communication environment (e.g., therapy room, classroom, gym). Parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s education. Support services are provided by physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, school psychologist and school social worker as well as nursing staff and a consulting physician. Offers a preschool which specializes in serving children in need of a highly structured learning environment and present with autism spectrum disorders or PDD (pervasive development disorder). Classes are small which allow for an intensive learning environment. The Language Enriched Academic Development Program (LEAD) effectively targets communication competence, social interactions, and pre-academic and academic readiness skills. A collaborative model provides a speech and language therapist with the special education teacher in every classroom all day, every day, to support speech, language, cognitive and social development. They utilize the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to shape behaviors and teach new skills through repetition and reinforcement. Instruction targets Activities of Daily Living (ADL). A progressive total communication system is utilized including spoken words, photographs, pictures, symbols and/or sign language, to increase communication skills. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to engage students in a social exchange to request and/or communicate their needs. Additionally, we have specially trained staff that may address any mealtime management concerns, such as limited food repertoire. A collaborative team including teachers, social workers, psychologist, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and administrative personnel strive to meet the individualized educational needs of each child. Family input is encouraged and parent training is provided throughout the school year. Provides classroom based programs for children ages 2.9 through 5 years of age, who have been evaluated and approved to attend the program by the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) from the community in which the child resides. As per the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) children may receive rehabilitative therapies, nursing services and counseling services. Also offers a day care component for typically developing children. The Center is also an approved evaluation site for the Committee on Preschool Special Education, with evaluations being conducted on site in either Bayside or the Roslyn site (St. Mary's Kids at Roslyn) as well as in the child's home.
