Responsible for septic systems, inspections and permit issuance, drinking water testing, public health hazards and nuisances, clean indoor air enforcement, onsite wastewater treatment system regulation, rabies investigations and vaccinations, insect control, West Nile Virus surveillance. Rabies vaccinations: Conducts free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in several locations across Cattaraugus County. All Cattaraugus County residents are eligible for these free vaccinations. Notices will be posted on the Cattaraugus County website, through radio, newspaper ads, fliers on community boards around the County. May also contact us to find out when and where the next clinic will be held.

Responsible for maintaining safe clean air by permit review, source inspections, complaint investigations, and sampling.
Conducts property transfer surveys which includes bacteriological water analysis and testing of on-site waste water treatment systems. Regulates all public water supplies as defined by Part 5 of the NYS Sanitary Code. Oversees cooling tower registry and reviews water testing results. Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Provides free rabies clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in various locations throughout the year. Call or go online to find locations and register. Responsible for food service establishment permitting, education, and inspection. Oversees permitting and enforces the NYS Sanitary Code for Bathing Beaches, Children Camps, Swimming Pools, Temporary Residences, Tanning Salons, and Tattoo and Piercing Parlors. Investigates and oversees the abatement of lead-based paint hazards in dwellings where children under 6 years of age resides.

  • Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
  • Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.
  • Immunization Program (provides mandatory and optional vaccines for the county residents)
  • Communicable Disease Program (investigates and coordinates with other agencies on reports of State-defined communicable diseases).
