Primary services include: - Monitoring the community for the presence of communicable diseases; - Providing information on communicable diseases, including preventative measures, to members of the medical community, the public, and individuals exposed to communicable diseases; - Investigating outbreaks or unusual occurrences of disease, then instituting or recommending appropriate control measures; - Investigating foodborne illnesses that occur in Erie County; - Coordinating follow-up on animal bites and providing information on the treatment and risk of rabies; - Compiling a community health assessment that provides information on births, deaths, etc., as a resource for planning or evaluation.

Responsible for maintaining safe clean air by permit review, source inspections, complaint investigations, and sampling.

Provides information and water testing for both drinking and recreational water. Also assists those in apartment buildings, or public buildings where water or heating issues are occurring, and have been ignored by the landlord.

Responsible for protecting the community from adverse health effects that may result from environmental pollution, unsanitary conditions or unsafe practices. Activities include backflow prevention, inspection and regulation of public beaches and swimming pools, information on beach openings and closings, inspections and monitoring of children's summer camps, demolition permits, monitors the quality of drinking water, conducts hearings on alleged violations of Public Health Laws, inspects food service establishments and investigates foodborne disease outbreaks, provides training for food service managers, responds to complaints regarding dog waste, garbage overflowing sewage and bird feeding, responds to heating complaints, regulates the removal or abandonment of fuel oil tanks, tests for lead exposure, investigates reports of animal bites and rodent complaints, inspects sewer connections/closures, controls the spread of mosquitoes, and inspects and provides sanitary control over motels and hotels. Offers health education programs on a number of topics to schools, agencies, businesses, civic groups and the general public, including health advisory information.

Responsible for monitoring and protecting the environment and ecological resources of the County, including groundwater, marine and fresh waters, wetlands, other natural resources, and permitting and inspecting bathing beaches. Investigates diseases and outbreaks that are reported to the New York State Department of Health. If the communicable disease nurse calls, the information obtained is kept confidential and is used to protect people from getting a contagious disease.

• Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
• Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.
• Immunization Program (provides mandatory and optional vaccines for the county residents)
• Communicable Disease Program (investigates and coordinates with other agencies on reports of State-defined communicable diseases).
• Healthy Families Program (Assists at-risk families with strength-based guidance and support in parenting and other life issues).
• Emergency Preparedness (Promoting and educating the community on being prepared for natural and other disasters).
• Children's Programs including Early Intervention.
