Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. The department will answer all questions regarding rabies, raccoons, bats, ticks and more. Please report any sick or strange-acting mammals (except small rodents) observed at any time to the Nassau County Department of Health. Call for detailed information.

Through enforcement, education, and other disease prevention activities, is responsible for the following health programs: Rabies Prevention: Conducts investigations of domestic animal bites and scratches and wildlife encounters between people and/or their pets. Fee Rabies Vaccination Clinics for dogs, cats, and ferrets. Rodent Control: Responds to service requests regarding rodent infestations for properties that are 4 unit residences or less which are not part of an apartment complex or commercial property. Public Health Nuisance Complaints (Public Health Nuisance = anything dangerous to human life or detrimental to health): Conducts investigations of complaints such as, but not limited to: properties that have rodent infestations, improperly stored garbage, junk and debris, improper bird and wildlife feeding, dog feces not cleaned up and disposed of properly. Arbovirus Prevention (Arbovirus = viruses transmitted by bloodsucking arthropods such as ticks, fleas, or mosquitoes): Conducts investigations of complaints such as standing water, improperly maintained swimming pools, and other man made containers that hold water and create mosquito harborage. A free program dedicated to improving the quality of life for Broome County residents by reducing exposure to health and safety risks in the home. The program includes a free in-home safety assessment along with product demonstrations and free safety supplies. The program helps to identify and address concerns around indoor air quality, lead-based paint, fire hazards, slips/trips/fall prevention, pest control, and other potential hazards. There are no income requirements. This is not an enforcement program.

In addition the Bureau helps to prevent the spread of arthropod-borne diseases including viral encephalitis, malaria, and tick-borne diseases including, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Tularemia. Surveillance is conducted to determine the presence of various species and prevalence of these pathogens in our arthropod population and investigate health threats of arthropod-borne diseases to Suffolk County residents.
