Rapidly identifies and isolates a rabid animal and prevent further transmission to humans or other animals. In addition the Bureau helps to prevent the spread of arthropod-borne diseases including viral encephalitis, malaria, and tick-borne diseases including, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Tularemia. Surveillance is conducted to determine the presence of various species and prevalence of these pathogens in our arthropod population and investigate health threats of arthropod-borne diseases to Suffolk County residents.
