Provides a wide variety of services essential to the health and well-being of all Genesee County Residents. Service areas include public water supply protection, community sanitation and food protection, private water and sewage disposal systems, realty subdivision plan review, public health nuisances, residential lead investigations, chemical emergencies, rabies investigations, and enforcement of both the Adolescent Tobacco Use and Prevention Act (ATUPA) and the NYS Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA). The Environmental Health division also operates multiple anti-rabies immunization clinics annually to administer vaccines to domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and ferrets, in order to reduce the spread of the potentially life threatening disease.

Provides educational programs on agriculture, horticulture and related topics. Provides assistance with insect, plant disease, weed identification and management crop production recommendations environment and health issues farmland and open space management and preservation. Also interprets research studies and educates populations on the proper safeguards when using chemicals/pesticides.

The County Emergency Management Office coordinates all planning, preparedness, response and recovery efforts in the case of an emergency or disaster. They also administer various federal and state grants in the areas of emergency response.

Serves as a liaison for and facilitator of emergency response training. Provides emergency planning, preparedness, response and recovery efforts during an emergency also has listings of hazardous materials. Assigns house numbers so residents can better be located in an emergency.

Performs annual inspection and testing of all scales, gas pumps and other weighing or measuring devices used for retail services. Investigates consumer complaints related to improper weighing or measuring.

Five fire stations provide fire prevention education; fire suppression/rescue; building collapse; vehicle extrication; water/ice rescue; hazardous materials response; and emergency medical services (EMS).

Conducts property transfer surveys which includes bacteriological water analysis and testing of on-site waste water treatment systems. Regulates all public water supplies as defined by Part 5 of the NYS Sanitary Code. Oversees cooling tower registry and reviews water testing results. Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Responsible for food service establishment permitting, education, and inspection. Oversees permitting and enforces the NYS Sanitary Code for Bathing Beaches, Children Camps, Swimming Pools, Temporary Residences, Tanning Salons, and Tattoo and Piercing Parlors. Investigates and oversees the abatement of lead-based paint hazards in dwellings where children under 6 years of age resides.

Erie County's ATUPA (Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act) Program is part of a comprehensive state wide enforcement program designed to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use, and to attempt to prevent tobacco access to youth less than 18 years of age. The program coordinator maintains an up to date listing of registered and unregistered tobacco retail dealers and vendors (including cigarette vending machines) within the County. All facilities are visited yearly by program personnel to verify that they are properly registered with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to sell tobacco products; that proper signage regarding the sale of tobacco products to minors is conspicuously posted; and that tobacco products are properly and safely stored to prevent access to unauthorized individuals. Additionally, at least one compliance check per year with underage youth is done at each facility where tobacco products are available for sale, to verify that such products are not being sold to minors.

Offers three major programs, the Toxic and Hazardous Material Storage Program, the Environmental Assessment and Remediation Program and the Swimming Pool Program. The registration, inspection, testing, permitting and closure of storage facilities containing toxic or hazardous liquids is the core responsibility of the Office of Pollution Control. The cleanup of contaminated storm drains, septic systems and leaching pools is completed in the OPC’s Remediation Program. The OPC inspects industrial sites and commercial establishments to verify compliance with Suffolk County Sanitary Code. The greatest threats to the county’s drinking water supply, gas stations and dry cleaners, are inspected on a more frequent basis. The OPC regulates most public swimming pools in Suffolk County. DBCH conducts inspections, monitors, and approves permits for public facilities including children's camps, food service facilities, swimming pools, sewage collection/ disposal and treatment. Investigates food borne illnesses, sewage failures, animal infestations, and animal bites. Provides technical assistance for chemical spills or other hazardous waste. Also does compliance checks on tobacco retails to enforce state and local clean air regulations.

Regulates facilities that store toxic & hazardous materials, regulated under Article XI of the Nassau County Public Health Ordinance (NCPHO), these facilities must register such storage areas with the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH). Call for detailed information.

Maintains town-owned landfill for registered carter dumping. Provides for hazardous waste dumping twice a year call for schedule. Facilitates communications between residents and carters.

Promotes and protects the health of all who live, work, and play in Nassau County. Public Health Sanitarians inspect for health hazards and advise on preventive measures to maintain a healthy environment.
