Offers educational, environmental, and natural resources programs that cover water quality, forestry, and land-use planning. Works to motivate people to properly plant and care for urban trees, protect waterways from pollution sources, and take part in land-use planning activities at the local level.

Provides detailed environmental analysis of all proposed projects and makes specific recommendations to the Town Board. Develops and implements environmental improvement and protection projects including erosion control, wildlife habitat improvement, drainage projects, shellfish seeding programs, woodland restoration, and public awareness programs on the need for recycling.

Regulates activities along the wetlands and shoreline of Town, including structural improvements to property, excavation and filling within 75 feet of wetlands or open water, dredging, construction of docks, ramps, floats, pilings, moorings, bulkheads, or any stabilization structures. Grants permits including coastal erosion permits, wetland permits, trustee land permits, grandfather permits and waivers from the full application process.

Ensures the observation of state and local laws for the protection of life, property and the natural resources in Islip's marine district. Works closely with Suffolk County Marine Police and the U.S. Coast Guard in their law enforcement, and search and rescue missions.

Responsible for monitoring and protecting the environment and ecological resources of the County, including groundwater, marine and fresh waters, wetlands, other natural resources, and permitting and inspecting bathing beaches. Offers marine education programs to schools, scout groups and other institutions or organizations. Also offers a Marine Summer Day Camp.

This weekly program monitors the health of the bay and enables trained volunteers to work alongside environmental professionals and former science teachers in order to monitor various components of the marine ecosystem. Call for more information. Program runs April through October.

Serves as a social activity focal point for the beach buggy owners on Long Island. Preserves and protects the beaches of Long Island. Meetings are held the second Thursday of the month at the Robert Sweeney Education Center, Ocean Parkway, Babylon at 7pm.

Promotes the recreational activities and sports of scuba diving, skin diving, snorkeling, and free diving. Also educates the public about scuba diving. Controls certain water-bottom lands and ponds, roads, trails and beaches, issues boat mooring permits and leases on land in Lazy Point manages use of beach vehicles, and large assemblage on beaches (parties) and works with the Natural Resource Department and the Nature Conservancy toward the protection of endangered species.

Monitors environmental factors in the Town, makes field surveys of beaches, marshlands, etc., warns of environmental hazards and possible dangers to fragile land areas, wildlife and plants. Accepts Grant applications for Environmental Projects for East Hampton.
