ParentChild+, formerly called the Parent-Child Home Program, uses education to break the cycle of poverty for under-resourced families with young children. ParentChild+ works one-on-one with families and with family child care (FCC) providers to ensure children achieve their greatest potential in school and in life. Our dual models enable the program to blanket underserved communities with school readiness supports and reach families with children four and under who would otherwise not be ready for school. Highly trained Early Learning Specialists engage families and FCC providers by modeling reading, conversation, and play activities. Through one-on-one visits to families and visits to providers and children in home-based care settings, ParentChild+ builds opportunities for the most vulnerable children and families. Since 1965, ParentChild+ has been assisting under-served communities in replicating and expanding these proven models, setting children on the road to school and life success and strengthening families, providers, and communities.

Offers a program designed to promote the development of educationally at-risk pre-school children, ParentChild+ sends trained home visitors into participants’ homes to help parents become their children’s first teacher and make home their first classroom. Home visitors teach parents to increase children’s vocabulary through conversation, reading together, and play. They also assist children to develop pre-literacy skills so they will be on a par with their peers when they enter Pre-K. Developmentally appropriate books and toys are used to foster language development and pre-literacy skills. Children of families that participate in this two-year program begin their formal school experiences with a vocabulary that is on a par with children from “middle income” families. Collaborates with Literacy Suffolk, Inc. to offer services of trained literacy volunteers. Provides help with reading/writing skills and English as a second language (ESOL). Provides a culturally responsive learning environment with dual-language for children from birth to 5 years and their parents/caregivers. Learning activities take place at learning centers, in the community, and in the home.

Provides an in-home school readiness program with twice weekly visits with the family, bringing a new book or toy for the child to keep and model for the parents' fun ways to help their child learn through play.

Provides opportunities for migrant farm workers and their families on a regional, statewide, and national basis to encourage and assist them in achieving their full potential. Includes initiatives to increase literacy.
