Students will learn the skills necessary to successfully pass the Radiologic Technology Registry Exam. This nationally recognized certification from the ARRT demonstrates that you have the knowledge necessary to work anywhere in the United States. Through the Radiologic Technology program at Western Suffolk BOCES, you will receive training in modern diagnostic radiography. Serves students with disabilities from the component school districts. This program provides a self-contained learning environment with modifications as determined by the Committees on Special Education (i.e., 12-1-1 and 8-1-1). The Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education. Offers the Automotive Technical Training program. Western Suffolk BOCES is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation. Upon successful completion of this full-time program at Western Suffolk BOCES’ Northport campus, you will have acquired the skills needed to work in an auto dealership, auto repair shop or similar setting as an entry-level automotive technician. Offers a Fast-Track 7-hour course for those contractors and experienced operators who have experience as a heavy equipment operator and are not certified. Nassau BOCES has partnered with The LEARN Center to offer a solution that will protect you or your business from OSHA/NYC DOB safety violations. New laws and regulations are requiring that operating engineers be certified in the safe operation of heavy equipment. Certification is available on the backhoe, bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader and skid-steer. This 7-hour evaluation course consists of a 4-hour safety class and evaluation of the operator skills through practical exams for up to 3-hours. Offers remedial courses for students in grades 6–12 to make up deficiencies in academic work. This wide variety of remedial courses can benefit students with low or failing grades. These courses help to address regression or summer slide in order to prepare students for upcoming courses. This does not replace a full course year. Residents within the ten (10) participating districts (listed below) whose children are registered in public, private or parochial schools, grades 6-12, are eligible to attend, with permission of their home school principal or designee. Offers students a full-time, two-year program that qualifies students to sit for any of five registry examinations in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This accredited School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Western Suffolk BOCES prepares students to work with patients and medical staff in physicians’ offices, hospitals and clinics. The BOCES curriculum integrates basic sciences, medical sciences and instruction in diagnostic medical sonography with supervised clinical experience in hospitals and doctors’ offices from Manhattan to Southampton. These clinical sites provide unique opportunities for learning and excelling as students rotate through five specialties of Abdominal, Breast Ultrasound, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Adult Cardiac and Vascular Sonography. The School of Practical Nursing at Western Suffolk BOCES is approved by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. BOCES’ program offers a low student-to-teacher ratio that allows many opportunities for highly personalized, hands-on instruction. The School prepares students to work with patients and medical staff in medical facilities including nursing homes. Students are then assigned to a clinical site at one of Long Island’s excellent health care facilities where they work under the guidance of an experienced health care professional.
