Provides assistance for people who have been discriminated against in Westchester County who believe that they have been treated unfairly or denied normal privileges by a commercial establishment or other facility that serves the public based on their age, gender, race or ethnic origin, nationality, religion, disability, sexual orientation or marital status.

Assists individuals with filling out the appropriate paperwork regarding discrimination and investigates the complaints. Also provides investigative information for legislation to help create or change laws.

Provides assistance for people who have been discriminated against in Westchester County who believe that they have been denied an opportunity to join a service group, club, fraternal organization or other association of their choice based on their age, gender, race or ethnic origin, nationality, religion, disability, sexual orientation or marital status.

Investigates complaints of discrimination by aggrieved individuals. Investigations of discrimination usually begin upon receipt of a complaint. The complaint may be initiated by mail, telephone, or a personal visit to the office. If the initial process reveals that a 'prima facie' (or first instance) case of discrimination has been made, a verified complaint is then accepted. A verified complaint may be filed under Nassau County Administrative Code or under New York State Human Rights Law, under a Memorandum of Understanding with the New York State Division on Human Rights. Throughout the process, every effort is made to resolve the matter through persuasion and conciliation. The Investigations Unit also conducts training sessions among county agencies and in the private sector, to promote equality of treatment and access, to all people. Provides numerous types of training workshops and consultations in conflict resolution, prejudice reduction, and leadership development for teachers, students, and organizations all through its national and regional offices.

Will offer referrals to needed services in the community, help with claims against employers who discriminate and/or do not pay, help file police reports if they are robbed or assaulted, etc.
