Community Liaison Officers [CLOs] and Community Oriented Police Engagement [COPE] Officers are assigned to each of the seven precincts, serving as a bridge between the Department and the communities it serves. They work with an array of individual community members, advocacy groups, business owners, school officials, and other governmental agencies to enhance community relations and to help identify important issues. Coordinated through the Boy Scouts of America. The goal of the Police Explorers program is to provide an immersive career experience within a controlled environment focused on law enforcement. We aim to aid our Explorers in gaining confidence while garnering career readiness as they learn about the purpose, mission, and objectives of law enforcement agencies. Our program consists of training, community service, practical experiences, character development, physical fitness, life skills, leadership opportunities and exposure to multiple law enforcement careers. They conduct community service, provide crime reduction and prevention materials to the public, as well as learn about civic responsibilities and the law enforcement profession from Police Officers who act as advisors and mentors. Exploring is not a boot camp. We are looking for young individuals with a genuine desire to make a difference in the community in a positive way with an interest in pursuing a law enforcement career or a related field in the criminal justice system. Old Brookville Police Department (OBPD) will be a single-village police department and start patrolling Old Brookville exclusively.

Act as a liaison between the school administration, students, and the Police Department. SROs provide a safe learning environment in schools, contribute valuable resources to school staff members, and foster positive relationships with youth and the community. SROs work with school officials in identifying at-risk youth, then mentor and guide them to resources within their community to help form more positive behaviors and choices. SCPD has a Spanish speaking SRO assigned to the Community Relations Bureau to help foster relationships with the Spanish speaking community within Suffolk County. School Resource Officers conduct presentations to high schools and middle schools across the county regarding various safety topics, including, but not limited to, Internet Safety, The Dangers of Drugs and Alcohol, Vehicle Safety, What To Do When Stopped by the Police and Opportunities of Employment within the Suffolk County Police Department. SROs also conduct programs in Elementary Schools such as 911 Awareness and Stranger Danger. SROs participate in after school activities such as sports, cooking, hiking and fishing. SROs also organize field trips such as Police Week and assist at college visits with school personnel, providing students with the ability to develop a close relationship with their SRO. Programs can be tailored and every effort will be made to accommodate the needs of each individual school based on current events and local issues. The program is based on Five Areas of Emphasis: Career Opportunities; Life Skills; Citizenship; Character Education and Leadership Experience. An important goal of law enforcement exploring is to help young adults be responsible and caring people, both now and in the future using “character education activities” which helps young adults develop the ability to make responsible choices. It aids teens in becoming more independent, developing social relationships, re-evaluating values while also undergoing positive physical and psychological changes. Established the student internship program to assist students in furthering their education and experience in the field of criminal justice. The Suffolk County Police Department offers this unique opportunity for students to observe the functions and operations of the department. The program will give each student a representative sampling of the comprehensive training that every police recruit must complete before they can transition to patrol duty. Interns will be assigned to their local precinct to observe the different commands of the precinct. Interns will also be assigned to Special Patrol and various commands in Police Headquarters. Clients are educated on the legal implications of their behavior as well as its efforts on their significant other and family members. Emphasis is placed on learning to take responsibility for one's behavior and learning to control violent impulses. Clients are given information on counseling services available to them and their families.
