Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. Staff development training in schools and youth-serving organizations. Training curricula offer skills and resources for clinicians, teachers and administrators to end bullying, homophobia and violence in schools and our communities.

Provides support to community agencies dealing with gang related activities. Coordinates existing community-based gang prevention, intervention programs and reinforces strategies that are closely aligned with law enforcement efforts.

Provides a variety of preventative and academic services for children and teens, including; tutoring, homework help, mentoring, therapeutic after school and summer programs, youth training/employment, leadership develpoment, community service, community service , community attachment activities, social and problem solving skills development, diagnostic assessments and counseling, prevention of substance abuse, problem gambling, gangs, teen pregnancy. Offers children in first and second-grade important personal safety lessons while getting them actively involved in the learning process. The McGruff Program seeks to give children the social tools they need to recognize bullying behavior, prevent it from occurring and handle it effectively when confronted with a tough situation whether on the playground, the bus, the lunchroom or playing in the neighborhood. An interactive program that consists of 7-10 lessons taught once a week by prevention educators. It focuses on developing personal and interpersonal skills to resist pressures to use drugs and engage in negative behaviors. Skills include: goal setting, decision-making, bonding with others, identifying and managing emotions, and communicating effectively.

SNUG is an evidence-based street outreach program which helps with gun violence by identifying its causes and interrupting its transmission. The program focuses on youth between the ages of 14 and 24 who are at high risk for involvement with gun violence. The SNUG team develops and implements risk-reduction strategies to reduce that involvement with the goal of saving lives and helping individuals turn their lives around.

Provides teen gang and violence intervention programs.

Goal of the At-Risk Youth Jail Tour is to educate youth about the potential consequences of poor choices. A growing number of Suffolk County`s youth are in danger of falling prey to criminal and gang activity. Young teens especially face peer pressures that often make them act in ways that help them become “accepted” by a group, but they have no idea about the consequences of their behavior. As a result, many young people at an early age begin what may become a painful life of criminal behavior. These tours must be scheduled in advance and the youth must be accompanied by a parent. Provides an Extended School Day and School Violence Prevention program. Weekly clubs offer literacy activities through hands-on programming. School Violence Prevention provides crisis-intervention counseling and support groups to target protective assets and risk factors.
