Responsible for the service and enforcement of orders of protection throughout Suffolk County. They also arrest individuals charged with violating orders of protection and those with family offense related warrants. The Unit provides victims with a safe refuge by removing batterers from the home, seizing weapons and executing arrest warrants against the perpetrators of domestic violence. The Family and Child Advocacy Center is a multi-disciplinary team providing services to victims of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, and serious physical abuse. A child friendly environment is provided. Help offered includes victim support and advocacy. Medical and therapeutic services are available on location.

A state-mandated service provided by every county with the goal of keeping vulnerable adults safely residing in the community or in the least restrictive alternative. It involves intake, investigation, and assessment of referrals of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of qualifying vulnerable adults. APS workers develop services plans with eligible clients to remedy physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or to address unmet, essential needs of adults.

Provides evidence-based curriculum to parents and/or guardians with home-based parent education and support by offering skills and tools to help reduce the risk of further maltreatment such as abuse or neglect. Assists parents and/or guardians with interactions with their children and choice-behaviors.

Services include a 12-week group with a clinician that facilitates which includes assessment, consultation, counseling, skill building and support. 8 weeks of the 12 include an office-based psycho-educational group and in-home intervention that focuses on specific parenting issues.

Offers one-on-one counseling to domestic violence victims on short-term basis at no cost.

Encourages male-identified adults and youth to work as allies with female-identified adults and youth to prevent domestic and sexual violence and create healthy relationships.

Investigates reports of suspected abuse and maltreatment of children in Lewis County received from the NY State Central Registry for Child Abuse and Maltreatment. Caseworkers assess multiple risk factors and the safety of the children involved to determine if the family needs assistance in order to keep their children safe.

Offers information on a variety of crime prevention issues, programs or services, from public awareness, protection, and possible ways to prevent crime, etc. Also provides a helpline for those who have been crime victims.

Provides a child-friendly environment for multidisciplinary team responsible for the investigation of child abuse to complete a child-centered, forensically sound and interdisciplinary assessment, while providing support and other needed services to the child and family. Also offers education and public awareness, especially to those who work with children.

Offers education for k-12 school children, teachers, and parents. Teaches children about their rights to be safe, strong, and free. Successful strategies for personal safety demonstrated using simple role-plays, regarding bullying, internet safety internet safety, stranger danger, and known perpetrators. Provides a prevention program that promotes low-risk choices for students and reflects the attitudes, behaviors, and values of healthy lifestyles. Peer Educators are trained to facilitate on-campus and off-campus presentations that deal with alcohol and other drugs, general wellness, violence prevention, and sexual health. Other services include street outreach, resource and information library, video library, pamphlets, brochures, and periodicals.

* Provides resources and a network of professionals providing support and protection to victims of elder abuse through intervention, education, and services. Intervention in physical, emotional/psychological, and sexual abuse, financial exploitation, and caregiver neglect. Oversees Protective Services for Adults (PSA) and other adult services provided through the local departments of social services and local operations relative to Family-Type Homes for Adults (FTHA). Provides technical assistance to adult services staff of local districts; conducts informal case reviews; participates in audits; reviews consolidated services plans; conducts complaint investigations; and develops public education, training, and interagency initiatives.

Adult abuse is the mistreatment of an impaired adult, age 18 or over, who may be dependent on someone else for basic needs.

Provides school-based, community, and professional education programs on a variety of topics, including sexual abuse prevention, domestic violence awareness, healthy relationships, dating violence, and elder abuse.

Offers courses required by The New York State Education Department for all applicants for teacher and administrator certifications and students enrolled in teacher/administrator preparation programs. The following workshops are offered: Identifying and Reporting Suspected Child Abuse; Prevention and Intervention of School Violence (SAVE); Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) and Autism Workshop. These workshops are available to Stony Brook University and non-Stony Brook University students. If you are not a Stony Brook University student, please consult with your school's teacher certification advisor or the NYSED website for specific certification requirements prior to enrolling in a workshop. **THIS AGENCY HAS DISCONTINUED SERVICES AS OF MARCH 14, 2025** The Community Education Department helps the professional community be more effective in working with clients of all ages who are victims of rape and sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, and child abuse and neglect. The staff is available to perform onsite trainings for mental health practitioners, substance abuse counselors, youth workers, educators, health practitioners, and those whose work may intersect the victims of family violence and rape and sexual assault. Seminars on mandated reporting of child abuse include: how to work with domestic violence victims; general and advanced overviews of trauma; prevention of dating abuse and sexual assault for middle, high school and college students; and elder abuse. Works with community members and parents on issues such as preventing sexual abuse of children, preventing dating abuse, and to prevent and respond to domestic abuse and rape and sexual assault.

Provides preventive services to families in need of assistance to prevent child abuse/neglect who are at risk of foster care. CPS provided to all families reported to NYS Child-Abuse/Neglect Hotline regardless of income level.

Assistance with emergency placement of abused or neglected children at risk. Assessment for requests for foster care and adoption. Offers preventive services for children and families. Provides a registry of child abuse reports in New York State to encourage more complete reporting of child abuse and maltreatment.
