Oversees cases brought before a judge by the district attorney. The County Court hears cases involving crimes or violations of law committed within the county including cases involving drug treatment. Family Court hears cases involving children and families, juvenile delinquency, child protection, adoptions, support, paternity, foster care placement. The Surrogate Court hears cases involved with inheritance, such as probate of wills and administration of estates. The Supreme Court hears cases involved with negligence, divorces, and contract and breach of warranty

Provides attorneys to individuals in qualifying criminal, surrogate, and family court cases who are unable to afford an attorney.

Provides supervision of juveniles and adults who have been sentenced to probation including electronic monitoring and overseeing restitution payments. Offers juvenile diversion counseling and programming. The department also prepares pre-sentence investigations/reports for criminal and family courts as ordered by the courts.

Serves eviction notices, judgments for payroll deductions, and any other orders as established by the courts. Also attempts in recovering of monies and/or properties as a result of court orders. Accepts payments of bail and other fines for release from jail prior to trial. Issues identification cards.

Provides public safety through formal supervision and support for individuals who have been convicted of an offense and released into the community under the supervision of a probation officer. Many discretionary services for pretrial and alternative sentencing are also provided.

Provides juvenile intake, screening, assessment and diversion services in lieu of immediate Family Court referrals. Offers services for pretrial and alternative sentencing. Provides PINS (Person in Need of Supervison) services.

Assists in the process of selecting and tracking jurors for trials.

Prosecutes all criminal cases which arise or are otherwise prosecutable within the county court system.

Summons individuals who, if approved by the prosecuting and defense attorneys, will be required to sit on a jury in order to determine the guilty or innocent of an individual who has been accused of a public offense or to try a question of fact as in a civil suit.

Responsible for prosecuting all criminal offenses committed within Schuyler County including serious felony matters, misdemeanors, and violations under the Penal Law and Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York. Conducts investigations and assists state and local law enforcement agencies. Also assists crime victims who are seeking restitution.

Oversees filing, recording and storing official documents and acts as agent for state and federal governments for passports, pistol permits, sporting licenses and motor vehicle related transactions. The County Clerk is the County Registrar and Clerk of the Supreme and County Courts.

Prosecutes all level of crimes and offenses that occur in Columbia County. Provides legal advice and counsel to all police agencies in Columbia County.

* Advises, advocates, investigates and is a legal scholar to the grand jury and police agencies in the county, with the ultimate goal of assuring that justice is accomplished for everyone.

* Responsible for the prosecution of all violations of the law that occur within the county's borders. These prosecutions include felonies, misdemeanors, violations, and traffic infractions. * Responsible for handling criminal appeals at all levels of state courts. Ancillary responsibilities of the district attorney include extraditing criminals from outside the state, prosecuting forfeiture proceedings and working with victims of crime to help them secure the fullest measure of redress allowed by law.

* Provides the Child Custody Advocate Program - assists children caught in the middle of custody disputes.

• Explores the background and current family situation of the child.
• Presents the court with findings to assist in the decision concerning custody and visitation.

* Prosecutes criminal matters within Herkimer County.

Serves and enforces civil processes issued by the courts, including Summons, Petitions, Subpoenas, Real and Personal Property Executions, Orders of Seizure, Attachment Orders, Warrants of Eviction, Orders of Protection, and Civil Arrest Warrants.

Provides a hotline available for fraud reporting, for consumers, insurance, medicaid, landord/tenant issues, etc. Also offers a "Tenants Rights Guide" with information about leases, safety, repairs, and rights available to both tenants and landlords.
