Offers shelter placements and assistance with emergency housing needs through the Department of Social Services (DSS) under the auspices of the Nassau County Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD). Eligible individuals and families can, on an emergency, temporary basis be assisted with shelter and other items of need in order to meet their emergency. The goal is to provide families and individuals with the tools they need to secure a permanent, stable housing, and move as quickly as possible to a stable self-sufficient role in the community. In addition DSS offers assistance to a family or individual who is threatened with eviction or foreclosure, assistance may be available to save the current housing. These emergency programs are: Emergency Assistance to Adults; Emergency Assistance to Families and Emergency Safety Net Assistance. These programs were designed to meet one-time non-recurrent emergency situations. These benefits do have specific eligibility requirements, and each case receives the attention of a worker with specialized knowledge in this area. Peer outreach counselors assist each person to help them reestablish hope, take charge of their situation and get back on track. Services are mobile and can be provided in any setting where a person is most comfortable. Individuals receive peer support and are assisted with linkage to resources such as housing, self-help, mental health services, substance abuse, medical services, financial assistance, legal services, employment and benefits as needed.

The office accepts calls from individuals, case managers, community advocates and providers for questions about housing and referrals to services in Nassau County. There are special housing situations such as senior, disabled, assisted living, nursing home, and mental health, which each have their own application process. The office is also able to connect households to other programs that assist with rental arrears. Homeless Prevention continues to develop relationships with agencies across the County, which helps expedite applications and ensures that residents are only referred to programs for which they are qualified. Please note, the Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) offers assistance with rental arrears and must always be the first place you apply. ESG requires a denial from DSS as do the non-profits that distribute the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) monies, which also can assist with rental arrears. Also, please note, the Nassau County Emergency Shelter System can only be accessed by applying through the Nassau County Department of Social Services, located at 60 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Uniondale NY 11530. Meeting with the Homeless Prevention Office requires an appointment. The office does not accept walk-in inquiries. Nassau County residents with 72-hour eviction notices are directed to call the ESG 72-Hour Eviction Notice Line at (516) 571-0090. Offers time-limited, individualized financial assistance designed to assist Veteran households to obtain and retain permanent housing. Financial assistance is provided at a level that enables Veterans to maintain housing while seeking to increase income, relocate to less expensive housing, obtain a longer-term subsidy, and/or reduce expenses to sustain housing.
