MEALS ON WHEELS | MEALS ON WHEELS

Volunteers provide home delivered meals for the homebound, handicapped, chronically ill or convalescent persons in the community who are unable to prepare meals in Northern Brookhaven. Food prepared at St. Charles and Mather Hospitals and Port Jefferson Healthcare Facilities.

LONG ISLAND TALKING BOOK LIBRARY | LONG ISLAND TALKING BOOK LIBRARY

A Subregional Library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Lends books and magazines that have been professionally recorded onto cassettes to eligible individuals/organizations, along with special playback equipment, catalogs, and related library services. Maintains a Reading Equipment, Aids and Devices (READ) Center which displays adaptive reading equipment, by appointment only. Serves residents of Long Island of all ages who have a visual or physical disability. Offered by public libraries, in person at agency, or postage-free mail.

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT SERVICE TEAM | VISUAL IMPAIRMENT SERVICE TEAM

Provides coordination of services for legally blind veterans and their families. Duties include providing and/or arranging for the provision of appropriate treatment modalities to enhance a blinded veteran's functioning level. Other duties include identifying new cases of blindness, providing professional counseling, resolving problems, arranging annual healthcare reviews and conducting education programs relating to blindness.

CONSUMER DIRECTED PERSONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM | CONSUMER DIRECTED PERSONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

A consumer driven personal assistance program that allows people with disabilities to gain more control over their personal assistance services. CDPAP enables self directing consumers to advertise, recruit, interview, hire, supervise, train and dismiss their own personal assistant(s). Self directing persons assess their own needs, determine how and by whom these needs should be met, and monitor the quality of services received. Individuals independently make all decisions and manage services directly. If an individual is unable to do so, they may use a certain family member or friend to manage needed services.
