Responsible for developing and implementing emergency management programs and activities and coordinating all aspects of the county's mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities.

* Provides public health services that include:

• Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
• Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.
• Immunization Program (provides mandatory and optional vaccines for the county residents)
• Communicable Disease Program (investigates and coordinates with other agencies on reports of State-defined communicable diseases).
• Healthy Families Program (Assists at-risk families with strength-based guidance and support in parenting and other life issues).
• Emergency Preparedness (Promoting and educating the community on being prepared for natural and other disasters).
• Children's Programs including Early Intervention.

Offers a volunteer program whose primary mission is to enhance community safety by mitigating risks, preparing for emergencies, responding effectively to crises, and aiding in recovery efforts. The Auxiliary Police Section is comprised of over 30 community based units. Each unit is made up of dedicated volunteers who: Prevent & deter criminal activity by routine patrols in marked Auxiliary Police vehicles; Ensure the safety of our fellow residents during various community events; Manage traffic at parades and special events such as the LI Marathon, fireworks displays, holiday ceremonies as well as other community events & festivities and Provide assistance and support services during disasters and other emergencies. Our auxiliary police officers must attend and complete a 150 hour / 38 session basic training course which is taught by state certified instructors at the Nassau County Police Academy. * Provides disaster assistance which is financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. * Provides disaster survivor resources. * Offers disaster recovery centers where individuals or families can go to for information about FEMA or other programs. * Offers a service in which individuals who have been denied assistance the ability to appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing and sent by mail or fax within 60 days of receiving the letter.

Practices continual surveillance and preparation for potential man-made or natural public health emergencies. Examples of such health emergencies include: Bioterrorism; Influenza and Hurricanes. While emergencies can occur on a county-wide scale, they can also occur at a local level and may involve small groups of individuals. Examples include: Home Heating Assistance; Carbon Monoxide Exposure; Chemical Exposure and Public Inquiries. Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive state strategy to prevent, detect, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism. It oversees and coordinates the collaborative counterterrorism efforts of critical state agencies, departments, and authorities and works with local government and the private sector. It serves as the primary point of contact for all state homeland security activity with the United States Department of Homeland Security and related federal agencies. The State Office of Homeland Security works to provide the greatest possible security for New York State.
