Provides leadership to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from a wide array of public health emergencies. Information is available to help individuals prepare for varying types of emergencies including weather, natural disaster, and disease outbreaks. Primary responsibilities include: - Developing and integrating all-hazards public health response plans; - Educating the public and training the county response partners in: Integrated Shelter Support, Isolation and Quarantine, Mass Fatality, Mass Vaccination and Mass Prophylaxis, Medical Surge, and Strategic National Stockpile Plan; - Conducting drills and exercises to test plans; - Recruiting, training, and deploying Erie County's Public Health Emergency Response Team and the Specialized Medical Assistance Response Team (SMART).

READY Genesee is designed to help citizens learn how to protect themselves and their families against all types of hazards. The focus of the content is on how to develop, practice, and maintain emergency plans that reflect what must be done before, during, and after a disaster to protect people and their property. Also included is information on how to assemble a disaster supplies kit that contains food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity for individuals and their families to survive following a disaster in the event they must rely on their own resources.

Works to develop and maintain countywide plans to meet resident and community needs in the event of a public health emergency including disease outbreak, natural disaster, or external threat.

Provides training, information, and resources to help craft artists prevent emergencies and to protect themselves and their businesses when emergencies occur. Also is a connection and guide to other sources for support, business development , health, safety, risk management and insurance. Also advocates and engages in research, and backs policy that supports craft artists' careers.

Practices continual surveillance and preparation for potential man-made or natural public health emergencies. Examples of such health emergencies include: Bioterrorism; Influenza and Hurricanes. While emergencies can occur on a county-wide scale, they can also occur at a local level and may involve small groups of individuals. Examples include: Home Heating Assistance; Carbon Monoxide Exposure; Chemical Exposure and Public Inquiries. Ensures that emergency managers address disability concerns and that people with disabilities are included in all levels of emergency preparedness - planning, response, and recovery.

* Provides disaster assistance which is financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. * Provides disaster survivor resources. * Offers disaster recovery centers where individuals or families can go to for information about FEMA or other programs. * Offers a service in which individuals who have been denied assistance the ability to appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing and sent by mail or fax within 60 days of receiving the letter.

Primary responsibilities include emergency planning and management, fire service and EMS coordination, and training of first responders. Works in the field and "behind the scenes" at most large events in the county and during disaster response and recovery.

Provides support to victims of fires and disasters. Provides blood donation services. Offers a series of courses on First Aid, CPR, Injury Prevention, Swimming, Life Guarding, and more. Courses offered at various sites. Corporate classes also available. Installs smoke alarms and provides in-home emergency planning assistance.

Assists local governments, volunteer organizations and private industry through a variety of emergency management programs. These programs include hazard identification, loss prevention and training, operation response to emergencies, technical support, disaster recovery assistance, and in times of an emergency/disaster, will coordinate the response of all State agencies, ensuring the most appropriate resources are dispatched to the impacted area.

Works to create a prepared and resilient community through planning, drills, and exercises under the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program. Responds to existing and emerging public health threats.

Provides education and support to the Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies, and coordinates the components of the Emergency Medical Services system. Every year the division attempts to increase emergency preparedness efforts, coordinated educational offerings with quality improvement efforts, expanded educational opportunities, and continued to focus on EMS system quality improvement in conjunction with the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO). Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive state strategy to prevent, detect, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism. It oversees and coordinates the collaborative counterterrorism efforts of critical state agencies, departments, and authorities and works with local government and the private sector. It serves as the primary point of contact for all state homeland security activity with the United States Department of Homeland Security and related federal agencies.
