Provides leadership to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from a wide array of public health emergencies. Information is available to help individuals prepare for varying types of emergencies including weather, natural disaster, and disease outbreaks. Primary responsibilities include: - Developing and integrating all-hazards public health response plans; - Educating the public and training the county response partners in: Integrated Shelter Support, Isolation and Quarantine, Mass Fatality, Mass Vaccination and Mass Prophylaxis, Medical Surge, and Strategic National Stockpile Plan; - Conducting drills and exercises to test plans; - Recruiting, training, and deploying Erie County's Public Health Emergency Response Team and the Specialized Medical Assistance Response Team (SMART).

Works to create a prepared and resilient community through planning, drills, and exercises under the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program. Responds to existing and emerging public health threats.

Primary responsibilities include emergency planning and management, fire service and EMS coordination, and training of first responders. Works in the field and "behind the scenes" at most large events in the county and during disaster response and recovery.

READY Genesee is designed to help citizens learn how to protect themselves and their families against all types of hazards. The focus of the content is on how to develop, practice, and maintain emergency plans that reflect what must be done before, during, and after a disaster to protect people and their property. Also included is information on how to assemble a disaster supplies kit that contains food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity for individuals and their families to survive following a disaster in the event they must rely on their own resources.

Provides the structure to organize mobile operations during an emergency for telecommunications, life support, power generation, operational support, on-site management of disaster/all-hazard activities.

Practices continual surveillance and preparation for potential man-made or natural public health emergencies. Examples of such health emergencies include: Bioterrorism; Influenza and Hurricanes. While emergencies can occur on a county-wide scale, they can also occur at a local level and may involve small groups of individuals. Examples include: Home Heating Assistance; Carbon Monoxide Exposure; Chemical Exposure and Public Inquiries. Contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services during normal business hours or in the event of an emergency, after normal business hours and weekends.

Responsible for planning and putting in place programs to respond quickly and effectively to threats endangering the health of the public and citizens. Threats include natural disasters, biological/chemical attacks, or emerging diseases.

* Provides disaster assistance which is financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. * Provides disaster survivor resources. * Offers disaster recovery centers where individuals or families can go to for information about FEMA or other programs. * Offers a service in which individuals who have been denied assistance the ability to appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing and sent by mail or fax within 60 days of receiving the letter.
