Has exclusive charge and supervision of the design, construction, repair, maintenance and cleaning of all streets and bridges under the jurisdiction of Nassau County, It has charge and supervision of the design and construction of county buildings, parks and grounds, drains and drainage structures, and of sewers, sewage disposal plants, water system and other structures in the nature of Public Works as the county may construct. Supervises the construction repair and maintenance of all roads, sidewalks, bridges, municipal parking areas, recharge basins and drainage structures and systems. Responsibilities include sand spreading, snow and street debris removal, maintenance of the safety of town roads by installing and maintaining traffic signals, street signs, pavement markings and street lights.

Constructs, maintains and operates county properties and designs, constructs and maintains county roads, sewerage systems, buildings and other facilities, such as waterways, bridges, docks and marinas. In addition, the department is responsible for the operation of the Suffolk County Transit System as well as controlling mosquitoes that transmit disease and impact the enjoyment of outdoor activities.

Responsible for maintaining more than 500 traffic signals across Brookhaven, including flashing signals, flashing beacons and driver feedback devices.
