Oversees and advises the government, public, and news media on Freedom of Information, Open Meetings, and Personal Privacy Protection Laws. The Committee offers guidance in response to phone inquiries, prepares written legal advisory opinions, and provides training to government and other interested groups. Recommendation to improve open government laws are offered in an annual report to the Governor and the State Legislature.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement supports the Suffolk County's commitment to the concepts of Equal Employment Opportunities, access to services, and zero tolerance for discrimination by providing oversight to a number of coalitions and committees that pursue the interests of these communities County-wide and advocate for the needs of communities of color. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement is also a home to the County's Minority Business Development Council and the Women's Business Enterprise Coalitions. Both Coalitions function to assist qualified women and minority-owned businesses in effectively competing for bids, contracts and other procurement opportunities in County government and other entities. Businesses seeking certification as a minority or women-owned business in Suffolk County, may also obtain applications and information on qualifications through the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement continuously offers technical assistance to community-based organizations providing outreach and services to the various ethnic communities in Suffolk. An outreach program for recipients of mental health services in Niagara County. Consumers are encouraged to become involved in decisions made regarding the services they receive for their illness. A monthly meeting is hosted by the MHA to allow consumers and service providers the opportunity to meet and discuss local planning of services.

The NYSDDPC Council is comprised of Governor-appointed volunteers. More than 60% of these volunteers must be individuals with developmental disabilities or family members. Other members include NYS State Agency representatives, UCEDD representatives, and representatives of the Protection and Advocacy System. In addition, a small staff of New York State employees supports the efforts of the Council in fulfilling its mission.

Primary activities include the annual Pinwheels and Promises Campaign in April for National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Strong Kids Safe Kids free family festival each September, an annual Child Abuse Prevention Award, and other activities.

The Ombudsman Program is an effective advocate and resource for older adults and persons with disabilities who live in nursing homes, assisted living and other licensed adult care homes. Advocates for residents by investigating and resolving complaints made by or on behalf of residents; promoting the development of resident and family councils; and informing government agencies, providers and the general public about issues and concerns impacting residents of long-term care facilities.
