Advocates and works to support Gay-Straight Alliances to end anti-gay bias in all schools. Scholarships are also given to students who want to begin a project to promote gay-straight alliance.

Independent Living is a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, a group of eighteen independent living centers throughout New York State which collaborates with other disability organizations to ensure that legislation affecting people with disabilities is introduced, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

The NYSDDPC Council is comprised of Governor-appointed volunteers. More than 60% of these volunteers must be individuals with developmental disabilities or family members. Other members include NYS State Agency representatives, UCEDD representatives, and representatives of the Protection and Advocacy System. In addition, a small staff of New York State employees supports the efforts of the Council in fulfilling its mission.

Provides mental health and support services for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults ages 22-49 and their families and friends. Address the needs of the African-American Advisory Board, Hispanic Advisory Board, Asian-American Advisory Board, Muslim-American Advisory Board, Jewish Advisory Board, and other minority residents of Suffolk County. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement supports the Suffolk County's commitment to the concepts of Equal Employment Opportunities, access to services, and zero tolerance for discrimination by providing oversight to a number of coalitions and committees that pursue the interests of these communities County-wide and advocate for the needs of communities of color. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement is also a home to the County's Minority Business Development Council and the Women's Business Enterprise Coalitions. Both Coalitions function to assist qualified women and minority-owned businesses in effectively competing for bids, contracts and other procurement opportunities in County government and other entities. The Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance program (HIICAP) is your source for free, current, and impartial information, counseling and advocacy services concerning health care coverage for seniors. Through our hotline and our volunteer counselors, we can provide you or family members with Medicare information on all aspects of health insurance including Medicare Parts A, B, C and D and EPIC.

Serves as the liaison between the county government and its Asian population. Coordinates resources for the Asian community with the goal of educating, empowering and developing integration initiatives that will foster greater participation in Nassau County’s social, economic, and civic life. Our staff works with the County Executive’s Office and other County agencies on the research, analysis, and implementation of policy to ensure that the Asian community is afforded equal opportunities, meaningful engagement, and access to Nassau County government services. The agency provides language access assistance to constituents seeking information about existing community and/or services related to employment, health, housing, and educational concerns; Organize cultural events to promote the diversity of Nassau County and allow residents to feel included in the fabric of the county; helps promote full participation of Asian-owned businesses in competing for bidding contracts in Nassau County. English as a Second Language, Pre-GED, Pre-literacy, Citizenship and Computer Classes with childcare, health screenings and Know Your Rights Clinics provided on-site during/immediately before and after class hours. While adults take classes, children are offered homework help and crafts/ educational activities in a dedicated children’s program room. Provides a wide range of gynecologic/reproductive health care services for adolescents, women and men. Offers family planning, contraception, testing, treatment and counseling for sexually transmitted diseases. Also provides telemedicine, pregnancy, abortion and gender affirming services. Offers sex education and reproductive health advocacy.

Exists to ensure equal opportunity in employment, housing, public accommodation, education and credit. Enforces the State's Human Rights Law by investigating, prosecuting, and resolving individual, group and Division initiated complaints of illegal discrimination. Educates the public to prevent and eliminate discrimination and promote awareness of the Human Rights Law. Develops legislation and policy to further the Division's role in enforcing the Law. Specialized information and referral/assistance program for older adults and their families. Supports the passage and enforcement of laws and other social measures that protect and promote the rights and interests of adults age 60 and up.

Receives and investigates complaints from individuals who believe they have been illegally discriminated against under New York State or federal human rights laws that apply to employment, housing, public accommodation, education and credit.

Serves women in all walks of life, at all times and passages on their lives. The office acts as the liaison between the women of Suffolk County and county government; Provides and sponsors free conferences, workshops and seminars on health, legal issues and personal enrichment topics; Operates a women’s helpline which provides information referrals, peer counseling and resource material on a wide-range of topics including: domestic violence, sexual harassment, legal rights and breast health and mammography information and Publishes brochures and literature addressing domestic violence. Works to change legislation and public policy for various issues which directly affect women in the work place, sports, medical issues, etc., and to educate others on the discrimination and the lack of rights towards women.

Counseling that enables individuals to achieve independence and community involvement. Services also provided to address the emotional needs of parents of children with disabilities. Service coordination assists in referring and linking families and/or individuals with community services.

Allows families to sit down and talk things over with a trained volunteer mediator.

Provides free legal advice, counseling, advocacy and representation for low income individuals in civil (non-criminal) matters.

The Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired enhances employability in order to maximize independence, and assists in the development of the capacities and strengths of people who are legally blind.
