Provides a protection and advocacy system for individuals and their families with chronic diseases or developmental and other disabilities. Offers legal assistance of issues including: disability, Medicaid and other insurance, permanency planning, and housing.

Helps seniors fill out forms such as H.E.A.P. (Heating Energy Assistance Program), and Senior Tax Exemptions.

An annual weekend retreat for high school students that offers workshops on current adolescent issues in a safe and fun-filled atmosphere. Since 1998, Common Threads has empowered youth to create a sense of community and affect positive change in areas such as diversity, health, personal safety, political advocacy, and combating discrimination.

Advocates and works to support Gay-Straight Alliances to end anti-gay bias in all schools. Scholarships are also given to students who want to begin a project to promote gay-straight alliance.

Offers public forums and discussions on structural racism and segregation on Long Island in an effect to promote advocacy and rise community awareness, with the goal of building collective actions to advance racial equality and inclusion.

Works to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and people with HIV or AIDS through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Pursues litigation in areas such as: housing, public accommodations, military, public policy, parenting and relationship issues, equal marriage rights, equal employment and domestic partnership benefits, and immigration issues.

Provides counseling, education, and empowerment for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Provides letters and consultations for gender reassignment surgery.

Provides support, assistance and advocacy for individuals and families needing help with issues relating to disabilities.

Educators provide specially tailored trainings in schools, small businesses, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Independent Living is a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, a group of eighteen independent living centers throughout New York State which collaborates with other disability organizations to ensure that legislation affecting people with disabilities is introduced, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

Program assists seniors 60 years and over to remain in their own homes after retirement. Services offered: healthcare monitoring and screenings, connections to benefits and services, home maintenance assistance and minor repairs, counseling, case management and service coordination, and nutrition assistance, as well as social and recreational opportunities.

Works to change legislation and public policy for various issues which directly affect women in the work place, sports, medical issues, etc., and to educate others on the discrimination and the lack of rights towards women.

Provides assistance for the elderly and their families who need help in solving the problems of daily living and in planning for the future.

Provides education, outreach, counseling and supportive services to lebian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTO) youth, up to age 30, and their families. Offers weekly young adult and transgender social support groups, individual and family counseling, free and confidential HIV/STD screening (up to age 45) and referrals to sexual health services. Also provides a Friday night drop-in center, up to age 21, for socializing with peers and drop- in short-term counseling, as needed. Provides social and educational groups for gay, bisexual and queer men (ages 18-45). Offers school-based services to include outreach and individual counseling at targeted schools, gay straight alliance (GSA) coordination and workshops, and workshops on Understanding Sexual Orientation and Understanding Gender. Offers workshops to professionals on working with LGBTO youth and creating safer school.

Provide connections to long-term services and support in the community which includes, personal care services, education and counseling, health and wellness, behavioral health supports and services, intellectual/developmental disability supports and services, and social supports

Provides LGBT youth and allies, ages 13-21 with the knowledge, motivation, and skills necessary to make proud and responsible decisions concerning their sexual health.

Services include summer employment program, handicapped bus, Handicapped Enforcement Parking Program, specialized library, newsletter, TTY phone, suggestions on removal of architectural barriers, information and referral, ombudsman who investigates complaints, and listing of accessible services/buildings.
