Substance abuse prevention program for Wyoming County. Professional prevention specialists deliver evidence-based prevention programs to Wyoming County school districts and communities. Programs include responsible server training, underage gambling awareness, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs training, substance abuse prevention skills training, teen intervention, and more. Encourages partnerships between traditional and nontraditional groups in the community such as youth, schools, probation, businesses, libraries, media, youth-serving agencies, and faith-based organizations, parents, and other concerned adults. Through such partnerships, this community-based coalition provides prevention strategies that target under-age drinking, cigarette smoking, vaping, marijuana use, prescription drug abuse, and use of heroin and other drugs.

The DFC program, in collaboration with the Communities That Cares (CTC) Coalitions, aims to reduce substance abuse among youth by addressing community factors that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. The CTC Coalition includes individuals from all sectors of the community who work together to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors through education, enforcement, and policy initiatives. Legislated in NYS as a response to injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers. Provides a general deterrence approach with four major components. Enforcement - includes 13 local police departments, sheriffs and state police. Adjudication - includes public defenders, prosecution and magistrates. Rehabilitation - includes an alcohol abuse counselor and a probation officer. Education - includes many programs geared to raising public awareness with a particular focus on students in local schools. The program is entirely funded through drunk driving fines received through town, village, city and county courts. No Yates County tax dollars are involved.
