The Office of Community Services, under NYS Mental Hygiene Law Article 41, is responsible for ensuring a comprehensive array of services across the disability groups of mental health, substance abuse and mental retardation/developmental disabilities for the citizens of Schenectady County. The office operates the County's adult and children's SPOA (Single Point of Access) and AOT (Assisted Outpatient Treatment) programs and contracts out direct service provision to a network of provider agencies.

Addresses the opiate epidemic problems in the community through the Oneida County Opiate Task Force. Works on suicide prevention in the community by strengthening the coordination and accessibility of services, providing awareness of suicide prevention facilitated by the Oneida County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Provides educational and informational opportunities to the general public, employers, and community agencies to increase awareness, acceptance and understanding of people living with mental illness while also promoting ways to maintain good mental health. Mental Health First Aid courses are run by certified instructors.

Provides direction for service provision to persons with chronic mentally illness. Involved in identifying service gaps/barriers and in responding through program development, facilitation of inter-organizational working relationships, and support of advocacy efforts to improve quality of lives of persons with chronic mental illness.

An evidenced based practice that is a hybrid of mental health clinical services and case management.

* Provides public education and referral for suicide prevention. NAMI Basics: a free 6-session course for parents, guardians, and other family living with a child or adolescent experiencing emotional and behavioral challenges. Nothing to Hide-Mental Illness in the Family: a museum quality, black and white photo-text exhibit consists of 20 photographs and interviews of families navigating the mental health system with their loved ones. The exhibit demonstrates qualities such as courage, resilience and the resourcefulness of family members advocating for their loved ones. NAMI Family to Family: a free 8-week course, 2 1/2 hours long, virtual or in person. Fopr family memeber and friends with an adult loved one with a serious mental health condition. NAMI ending the silence: youth awarenes and education, 50 min presentation in school for high schoolers. Provides awarances on mental health, signs, coping skills, miths, stigmas.

A free, confidential nationwide service that provides one-on-one emotional support, mental health information and resources needed to tackle tough challenges that you, your family or friends are facing.

Helpline. * Provides information about the service delivery system, legislation and community programs and resources. * Offers education in the community presented by individuals and family members with the lived experience of mental illness/health. * Offers special annual events.

Provides evidence based Mental Health First Aid training to the Nassau and Suffolk Communities. Training can focus on the population of your choice, and includes curricula options for youth, adults, veterans, public service and higher education professionals. Can be offered at any address in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Provides information and referrals to community members, professionals, providers, and clients. Peers provide the information and resources to callers and assist with navigating community organizations and links to services.

Psychiatric Aftercare Clinic for clients who have previously been inpatient.

Community Education programs and classes are designed and produced according to perceived need or request from the public. Programs range from free informational presentations to more formal established classes. Speakers are also available for outside presentations.

Specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric difficulties. Both individual and family oriented treatment is available. Psychiatric services and medication evaluation offered as needed, as are assistance with school-related issues and referral/linkage to appropriate community services in the area. Challenges addressed include anxiety, depression, grief, bullying, developmental disabilities, shyness, domestic violence, sexuality, communication difficulties, parenting, nightmares, anger, abuse, bipolar disorder, step-families and divorce, problems sleeping, trauma, and co-occurring disorders.
