Provides a place for people to enjoy and appreciate nature while restoring the health of the natural communities. It is a preserve and office facility for the Nature Conservancy on Long Island. Hiking trails are open daily dawn to dusk.

BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY | BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Promotes sound gardening methods, the preservation of the environment and an appreciation of the arboretum and the Long Island community through an extensive education program; lectures and demonstrations at monthly meetings; newsletters and a continuing liaison with other horticultural and environmental associations. Comprised of 1288 acres, this park offers a variety of facilities, events, and services including the beach off Long Island Sound, swimming, hiking trails (including the Greenbelt Trail), bicycling, picnic areas, refreshments/cafeteria, boardwalk, golf facilities (9 and 18 hole courses, putting green, driving range, clubhouse, pro-shop, golf tournaments), winter run and summer run series, cross country skiing, model airplane show, spring golf outing, and high school and college cross country running. Bicycles restricted from Boardwalk. No pets allowed year round in park.

Offers 769 acres of hardwood forest on the Long Island Sound. Attractions include saltwater fishing, cross-country skiing, and trailer/tent sites for campers. Facilities include beach, picnic area, softball field, hiking trails (about 11.5 miles), volleyball court, 2 basketball courts, horseshoe pits and nature trails. Activities include Fall Festival and cross-country skiing. Empire passport accepted no pets allowed. Call for further information.

DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION | TOWN OF BROOKHAVEN

Maintains the process and changes in the Town's natural environment, seeks to protect the ecology of delicate areas (i.e. the Pine Barrens, the water supply, shellfish grounds) while balancing residents' needs for development of residential and commercial areas. Maintains the Mt. Sinai Harbor Marine Sanctuary and Visitors Center where shellfish farming is undertaken.

JONES BEACH STATE PARK | JONES BEACH STATE PARK

Offers 6.5 miles of ocean beaches, part of a 2,413-acre park. Main attractions include swimming, surf fishing, and a 14,400-seat amphitheater. Facilities include pools, bathhouses, band shell, 2-mile boardwalk, 2-mile health walk, 4-mile bike path, boat basin, 4-finger piers, bait station, surf casting, picnic areas, 4 basketball courts, 22 shuffleboard courts, 8 volleyball courts, paddle tennis, equipment rentals, pitch-putt golf, 2 softball fields, food stands, boardwalk restaurant(new construction pending), ice cream parlor, and exhibits. Lifeguards available, hours and dates vary. Summer events include New York Air Show, a volleyball tournament, an Independence Day fireworks program, Summer Run Series and Pitch Putt Tournament. Empire Passport accepted no pets allowed. The Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center contains, interior and exterior environmental exhibits, a butterfly garden, and children activities. TACKAPAUSHA MUSEUM AND PRESERVE | TACKAPAUSHA MUSEUM AND PRESERVE

Offers an historic and beautiful 84-acre sanctuary of oak forests, ponds, streams, small mammals and scores of bird species, all of which can viewed via five miles of clearly marked trails. In addition, the preserve incorporates a 3,000-square-foot museum with displays about the ecology of Long Island, as well as animal exhibits and shows and interactive activities for children. SOUTH SHORE NATURE CENTER | SOUTH SHORE NATURE CENTER

A 200 acre preserve which stretches to the shores of the Great South Bay. It contains mature upland forests, freshwater wetlands, vast salt marsh, and an extensive network of trails and boardwalk. It also houses a Visitor's Center which provides interactive exhibits and collections of both live animals and mounted wildlife specimens and dioramas. The Nature Center is operated by the Seatuck Environmental Association through a partnership with the Town of Islip, which owns the property together with Suffolk County and The Nature Conservancy.
