Provides preventive services to families in need of assistance to prevent child abuse/neglect who are at risk of foster care. CPS provided to all families reported to NYS Child-Abuse/Neglect Hotline regardless of income level.

Foster Care: safe, temporary placement for children unable to safely live with their own families with goal of returning children to their homes. If needed, a permanency plan can free the child for adoption, independent living or discharge to an adult residential setting.Preventive Services: after referral, conducts needs assessment, creates service plan and makes referrals to community agencies. Workers provide casework counseling, transport, mediation, crisis intervention and, sometimes, financial management.

Orange County contracts with Merakey to provide crisis intervention, casework support, parent advocacy, housing advocacy, economic independence referrals, courtesy home studies, and information and referral information for families in need of assistance.
Receives reports of suspected child abuse and neglect and forwards these reports to the appropriate local district for an investigation. Not intended to be used as an emergency response law enforcement should be contacted for emergencies. Provides information and referrals in instances where the call does not result in a child protective report but further assistance is desired. Serves children birth to 18 years and 18-21 years old placed by the State Education Department into specified residential facilities.

Purpose is to prevent children from being placed in either congregate residential care or foster care. Home Safe works with families that need strengthening and other assistance. Children must be referred through Suffolk County Department of Social Services. Program provides in-home parenting skills and case management services to families who have DSS/CPS involvement. Services are offered weekly for a period of six months.

Investigates and prosecutes all felony cases involving the physical and sexual abuse of children under age 17, as well as all cases involving intimate partner and family violence. The Bureau’s mission also includes working with the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad in the investigation and prosecution of infant homicides. Many of CADVB’s cases require expertise in the areas of child sexual abuse syndrome, battered child syndrome, shaken baby syndrome, battered women’s syndrome, and rape trauma syndrome.
