Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. The department will answer all questions regarding rabies, raccoons, bats, ticks and more. Services include adoption, educational programs, enforcement of animal control laws, and dog licenses.

Provides information regarding city government issues.

Provides care for lost, stray and surrendered animals for the residents of Smithtown. Reunites lost animals with their owners and finds new homes for the unclaimed and relinquished pets. Enforces the animal control laws of the township and of the NYS Department of Agriculture. Responds to residents' complaints regarding stray, vicious, injured, barking, or owned loose dogs as well as sick or injured wildlife. Surrendered and unclaimed dogs and cats are available for adoption by either Town or non-residents.

The responsibilities of the ACO are to answer all dog complaints, bites, wildlife complaints and enforce Clarkstown Town Codes and Village of Upper Nyack Ordinances relating to dogs, and NYS Agricultural & Markets Law Article 7.Wildlife must be sick or injured for the ACO to respond. Wildlife in homes or on property that are not sick or injured may be removed at the property owners expense by hiring a Nuisance Wildlife Agent.
