The objective of the lending closet is to allow children with disabilities to use the equipment to determine if it would be beneficial for them in the long term. Space is also available for therapists to meet with clients and their families, with access to the Sensory Room and equipment as needed.

Provides adaptive equipment for short-term loan including wheelchairs, portable ramps, transfer benches, assistive listening devises, assistive speaking devices, canes, and walkers.

Trains and provides guide dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired. Each person must complete a 25 day in-residence training program at the Foundation. Each graduate receives a dog, its equipment, a comprehensive training program and after-care services without charge.

Offers guidance and counseling to assist consumers who are legally blind find or retain employment. Vocational counselors work with the consumer to develop an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). The IPE acts as a road map to guide the consumer toward their employment goals. Goals vary, and include preparing for and finding a job, continuing at a current workplace or maintaining a household independently.

Operates Medical Loan Closet service which can loan wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes, crutches and other assistive devices.

Instructs blind or visually impaired persons to travel safely and independently by learning or relearning the use of all sensory input (touch, sound, remaining vision) and through the use of travel aids, white cane, and sighted guide training. Skills are taught by a New York State-certified orientation and mobility instructor.

Lends medical equipment for home use Provides equipment loans to anyone for as long as needed. Provides information on adaptive equipment devices or assistance building wheelchair ramps. Call for information and availability.

Offers Assistive Technology Assessments for students with physical, orthopedic, communication, or learning disabilities who attend local district schools. Either individual assessments or a combination of assessments are provided. Alternative Augmentative Communication Evaluations are provided by speech language pathologists who determine the most appropriate communication method for the student. During the evaluation, the speech language pathologist identifies one or more appropriate devices that might be used. Technology Access Evaluations are provided by occupational and/or physical therapists working collaboratively with a special education teacher. The evaluation states the student's cognitive ability, readiness for computer use, and provides recommendations for the purchase of equipment and for the initial training of staff in its use. Provides free loans of assistive technology. Assistive technology is any device that can be used to improve the functional abilities of people with disabilities or short-term injuries. Available items include wheelchairs, walkers, Rollators, canes, crutches, ramps, grab bars, Hoyer lifts, adaptive seating, shower chairs, commodes, wander alarms, weighted items, adaptive utensils, laptops, iPads and deaf and blind/low vision technology. We also have learning aids, toys and games for early intervention, as well as pediatric equipment. Free delivery may be available.

Offers independent and working skills training in a variety of communications, household, personal, technology and related areas. Orientation and mobility training may include how to move about in a specific environment such as a home, school or work place. It usually involves teaching proper techniques for safe and effective travel with a long (white) cane. It also includes training on how to be aware of clues from the environment and knowing your location. Provides an open resource room for individuals to test and purchase accessible computer technology as well as additional low vision and mobility aids. Also offers Braille instruction, early intervention services for children and specialty services for older individuals.
