Provides a wide variety of services essential to the health and well-being of all Genesee County Residents. Service areas include public water supply protection, community sanitation and food protection, private water and sewage disposal systems, realty subdivision plan review, public health nuisances, residential lead investigations, chemical emergencies, rabies investigations, and enforcement of both the Adolescent Tobacco Use and Prevention Act (ATUPA) and the NYS Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA). The Environmental Health division also operates multiple anti-rabies immunization clinics annually to administer vaccines to domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and ferrets, in order to reduce the spread of the potentially life threatening disease.

Responsible for septic systems, inspections and permit issuance, drinking water testing, public health hazards and nuisances, clean indoor air enforcement, onsite wastewater treatment system regulation, rabies investigations and vaccinations, insect control, West Nile Virus surveillance. Rabies vaccinations: Conducts free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in several locations across Cattaraugus County. All Cattaraugus County residents are eligible for these free vaccinations. Notices will be posted on the Cattaraugus County website, through radio, newspaper ads, fliers on community boards around the County. Environmental Health is responsible for routine inspections of all food service establishments in Schenectady County. This includes restaurants, bars, taverns, caterers, and fast food establishments. Inspections are completed on a risk-based schedule. One to two inspections are completed per establishment each year. Priority is given to higher risk establishments.The unit is also responsible for investigation of all food service illness and/or general food service complaints.
Responsible for implementing programs and providing information to help individuals live healthier lives by minimizing environmental health threats. Some efforts are targeted to the population at large, such as monitoring of public and private drinking water supplies, food safety in restaurants, fire safety in hotels, and permitting of mass gatherings. Other programs target specific needs such as interventions to prevent illness from rabies, lead poisoning, failing septic systems, and sale of tobacco products to minors.

Inspects food service establishments, investigates foodborne disease outbreaks, responds to complaints, and provides training for food industry personnel. Under this jurisdiction, the Nassau County Department of Health permits over 5,700 food serving establishments in Nassau County, including restaurants, delis, mobile food trucks, schools, senior feeding units, and food vending units. It also reviews plans for new and renovated food-service establishments. The Bureau also will help with detailed information for those who want to operate a food truck or start a catering or bakery business in their home. The Bureau will provide a list of restaurant inspection records as well as take restaurant complaints. Call for detailed information.
DBCH conducts inspections, monitors, and approves permits for public facilities including children's camps, food service facilities, swimming pools, sewage collection/ disposal and treatment. Investigates food borne illnesses, sewage failures, animal infestations, and animal bites. Provides technical assistance for chemical spills or other hazardous waste. Also does compliance checks on tobacco retails to enforce state and local clean air regulations.
