Eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment, but may also include chimney cleaning, minor repairs, installation of carbon monoxide detectors or programmable thermostats, if needed, to allow for the safe, proper and efficient operation of the heating equipment. Benefit amounts are based on the actual cost incurred to provide clean and tune services, up to a maximum of $500. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available. They include the Petroleum Bulk Storage program, Toxic and Hazardous Materials Storage Program, Sewer Connection Program and closure of On-Site Sanitary Systems, monitoring inactive hazardous waste sites and the Underground Injection Control program (UIC). Nassau County has initiated a septic system replacement program for residents and small businesses -- Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC). The SEPTIC program will provide grant funding to eligible recipients to replace a conventional or failing septic system with an innovative and alternative onsite wastewater treatment system. Nassau County is offering grants up to $20,000 for homeowners or small businesses to install state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing septic systems. Program consists of monitoring lead test results, providing education, assessment of potential lead poisoning sources for removal. Specific services provided are: - Lead poisoning prevention education. - Lead screening for age appropriate children through referral to private physicians or directly for uninsured or under insured children. - FREE lead testing for children ages 1 and 2 who otherwise could not afford to be tested. - Case management to children with confirmed elevated lead levels and assess their environment to determine the source of lead contamination. - Instruction to property owners of the methods/procedures to reduce or eliminate sources of lead poisoning.

• Rabies Prevention (receive notification of all dog bites in the county and work with the person that was bitten to make sure they get screened for rabies risk and the need for post-exposure prophylaxis).
• Lead Poisoning Prevention (works with families of children at risk for, or with an elevated blood lead level to reduce that child's level). Testing is not provided by public health but a referral is made to the NYS office.
• Immunization Program (provides mandatory and optional vaccines for the county residents)
• Communicable Disease Program (investigates and coordinates with other agencies on reports of State-defined communicable diseases).
• Healthy Families Program (Assists at-risk families with strength-based guidance and support in parenting and other life issues).
• Emergency Preparedness (Promoting and educating the community on being prepared for natural and other disasters).

The Residential Lead Inspection unit is responsible for conducting environmental lead assessments at residential housing units. Assessments are done at homes that have children with elevated blood lead levels. Program issues "Notice of Demand" to remediate lead problems within these homes. Residential lead inspections are also done on a "request" basis as a fee-based service.

Certified water quality testing lab measures numerous water quality parameters, including coliform / e.coli bacteria, nitrates, lead and more. Partners with volunteers to monitor local water quality including monitoring harmful algal blooms on Cayuga Lake.
