A free program dedicated to improving the quality of life for Broome County residents by reducing exposure to health and safety risks in the home. The program includes a free in-home safety assessment along with product demonstrations and free safety supplies. The program helps to identify and address concerns around indoor air quality, lead-based paint, fire hazards, slips/trips/fall prevention, pest control, and other potential hazards. There are no income requirements. This is not an enforcement program.

HEAP CLEAN AND TUNE BENEFIT | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

The 2024-2025 HEAP Clean and Tune benefit opened on October 1, 2024. Eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment, but may also include chimney cleaning, minor repairs, installation of carbon monoxide detectors or programmable thermostats, if needed, to allow for the safe, proper, and efficient operation of the heating equipment. Benefit amounts are based on the actual cost incurred to provide clean and tune services, up to a maximum of $500. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available. Call for detailed information.

Environmental Health - Genesee County Health Department

Provides a wide variety of services essential to the health and well-being of all Genesee County Residents. Service areas include public water supply protection, community sanitation and food protection, private water and sewage disposal systems, realty subdivision plan review, public health nuisances, residential lead investigations, chemical emergencies, rabies investigations, and enforcement of both the Adolescent Tobacco Use and Prevention Act (ATUPA) and the NYS Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA). The Environmental Health division also operates multiple anti-rabies immunization clinics annually to administer vaccines to domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and ferrets, in order to reduce the spread of the potentially life threatening disease.

GROUNDWATER PROTECTION | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Involved in many programs to prevent subsurface discharges that have the potential to threaten our groundwater resources. They include the Petroleum Bulk Storage program, Toxic and Hazardous Materials Storage Program, Sewer Connection Program and closure of On-Site Sanitary Systems, monitoring inactive hazardous waste sites and the Underground Injection Control program (UIC). Nassau County has initiated a septic system replacement program for residents and small businesses -- Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC). The SEPTIC program will provide grant funding to eligible recipients to replace a conventional or failing septic system with an innovative and alternative onsite wastewater treatment system. Nassau County is offering grants up to $20,000 for homeowners or small businesses to install state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing septic systems. Rabies vaccinations: Conducts free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets in several locations across Cattaraugus County. All Cattaraugus County residents are eligible for these free vaccinations. Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention - Cattaraugus County Health Department

Provides a variety of services including: - Lead poisoning prevention education - Lead screening for age appropriate children through referral to private physicians or directly for uninsured or under insured children - Free lead testing for children ages 1 and 2 who otherwise could not afford to be tested. - Case management to children with confirmed elevated lead levels and assess their environment to determine the source of lead contamination. - Instruction to property owners of the methods/procedures to reduce or eliminate sources of lead poisoning.

Environmental Health Division - Chautauqua County Health Department

Conducts property transfer surveys which includes bacteriological water analysis and testing of on-site waste water treatment systems. Regulates all public water supplies as defined by Part 5 of the NYS Sanitary Code. Oversees cooling tower registry and reviews water testing results. Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Healthy Neighborhoods Program (HNP) - Cattaraugus County Health Department

Provides home safety visit to identify hazards or areas of concern, provide environmental information, create a home safety plan with recommendations for improvement, and provide products to carry out hazard reduction. Home visits include an assessment for hazards related to fire safety, lead poisoning prevention, indoor air quality, carbon monoxide poisoning, radon, ventilation and odors, cleaning and clutter, pests, mold/mildew and moisture, asthma, and injury prevention. The Healthy Neighborhoods Program (HNP) is designed to help improve the personal health, safety, and living conditions of individuals and families to reduce the burden of housing related illness and injury. Program provides home safety visits include an assessment for hazards related to fire safety, lead poisoning prevention, indoor air quality, carbon monoxide poisoning, radon, ventilation and odors, cleaning and clutter, pests, mold/mildew and moisture, asthma, and injury prevention. Following the home assessment, staff work with the resident to create a plan to make their home safer. Staff provides information, recommendations, and products to correct or reduce hazards. Products may include: smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, replacement batteries, radon test kits, fire extinguishers, asthma management tools, green cleaning items including baking soda and vinegar, child safety products such as door knob covers, outlet covers, and cabinet latches.

PETROLEUM BULK STORAGE | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH - DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Facilities that store petroleum products in tank systems regulated under Article XV of the Nassau County Public Health Ordinance (NCPHO) must register such tanks with the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH). Nassau County is committed to protecting our groundwater from petroleum contamination. The proper closure of small underground petroleum tanks, such as heating oil tanks, can reduce that threat. An outreach program to help improve and maintain personal health and environmental living conditions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. If environmental health hazards or problems do exist, our staff will direct them to the agency best able to help.
