Investigates special issues including rabies, radon, nuisance complaints, smoking in public, emergencies related to Public Health, West Nile Virus/Eastern Equine Encephalitis, mosquito vector surveillance, and control measures as warranted. Home safety visitation program that includes an assessment for hazards related to lack of working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers, blocked fire exits, paint in poor condition and other lead hazards, poor condition of roof, floors, walls, handrails, and steps, mold and water leaks, pests, and asthma triggers. After assessment, homes may be provided with information on fire safety, carbon monoxide poisoning, radon gas, pest control, smoking cessation, asthma triggers, and lead poisoning prevention. Eligible homes may receive supplies such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, radon test kits, fire extinguishers, cleaning supplies, and asthma management tools.

Provides services including free home inspection for lead hazards and instruction on lead abatement for tenants, landlords, and homeowners. May also offer cleaning and painting supplies and a free lead renovator's education course along with a re-inspection. For children identified as having high blood levels, provides education, monitoring, case follow up, environmental investigation, nutrition, and developmental screening.

The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. Provides the information and tools that families, homeowners, and property owners need to prevent children from being exposed to dangerous lead hazards. Program comprises two parts: The Lead Poisoning Primary Prevention Grant Program (Lead Primary) and Lead Poisoning Primary Prevention Initiative (Primary Initiative). Lead Primary activities are focused in neighborhoods that have been identified as "communities of concern" where children are at highest risk for lead poisoning. Activities are carried out in 1, 2, 3 or 4 unit family homes in zip codes identified as "Communities of Concern" for lead poisoning (see eligibility for specific zip codes). "Areas of High Risk" within these zip codes are identified to receive a concentrated intervention. Each home in the "area of high risk" receives a full exterior inspection, and in some cases, an interior inspection and a lead education visit for the occupant. Repairs, utilizing lead safe work practices, must be made to any identified lead hazards. The Primary Initiative is a county-wide program available in all areas of Erie County. Families with young children who want information about lead poisoning prevention can request an assessment of their pre-1978 home. A visual exterior and interior inspection by staff will identify any potential lead hazards and a lead education visit with the family will provide cleaning supplies and strategies for avoiding lead hazards. Repairs, utilizing lead safe work practices, must be made to any identified lead hazards. Benefit amounts are based on the actual cost incurred to provide clean and tune services, up to a maximum of $500. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available. Aims to assure safe food in restaurants, clean and safe drinking water, safe bathing beaches, swimming pools and children's camps, and clean air and water.

Nassau County has initiated a septic system replacement program for residents and small businesses -- Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC). The SEPTIC program will provide grant funding to eligible recipients to replace a conventional or failing septic system with an innovative and alternative onsite wastewater treatment system. Nassau County is offering grants up to $20,000 for homeowners or small businesses to install state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing septic systems.
