A free program dedicated to improving the quality of life for Broome County residents by reducing exposure to health and safety risks in the home. The program includes a free in-home safety assessment along with product demonstrations and free safety supplies. The program helps to identify and address concerns around indoor air quality, lead-based paint, fire hazards, slips/trips/fall prevention, pest control, and other potential hazards. There are no income requirements. This is not an enforcement program.

This program is sponsored jointly by the Chemung County Health Department and the City of Elmira to educate parents, homeowners, and landlords.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations protecting the county's ground and surface water resources. Enhances and preserves the environmental and public health of the community through services, education, and enforcement.
Investigates complaints concerning housing, seeks and if necessary enforces compliance with violations, conducts inspections of permitted rooming houses, and conducts pre-rental inspections on behalf of DSS.

Regulates facilities that store toxic & hazardous materials, regulated under Article XI of the Nassau County Public Health Ordinance (NCPHO), these facilities must register such storage areas with the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH). Call for detailed information.
An outreach program to help improve and maintain personal health and environmental living conditions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. If environmental health hazards or problems do exist, our staff will direct them to the agency best able to help.

Public water systems are routinely tested by both the public water supplier and the Nassau County Department of Health. Wells, treatment facilities, water storage tanks, and the distribution systems are tested for over 150 different contaminants. Your local water supplier handles complaints about rusty water or odors. Other inquiries may be made to the Health Department Bureau of Water Supply at 516-227-9692 weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For emergencies after business hours, call 516-742-6154.

The Residential Lead Inspection unit is responsible for conducting environmental lead assessments at residential housing units. Assessments are done at homes that have children with elevated blood lead levels. Program issues "Notice of Demand" to remediate lead problems within these homes. Residential lead inspections are also done on a "request" basis as a fee-based service.
