The Environmental Health Division is dedicated to protecting people in Erie County from biological, chemical, and physical hazards that may be present in food, water, and the built environment. Provides a wide variety of services essential to the health and well-being of all Genesee County Residents. Service areas include public water supply protection, community sanitation and food protection, private water and sewage disposal systems, realty subdivision plan review, public health nuisances, residential lead investigations, chemical emergencies, rabies investigations, and enforcement of both the Adolescent Tobacco Use and Prevention Act (ATUPA) and the NYS Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA). Investigates animal and/or bat exposure and potential incidents and sends samples to the state laboratory for rabies confirmation. Staff assists individuals with treatment referrals. Provides a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats or ferrets each spring.

Responsible for implementing programs and providing information to help individuals live healthier lives by minimizing environmental health threats. Some efforts are targeted to the population at large, such as monitoring of public and private drinking water supplies, food safety in restaurants, fire safety in hotels, and permitting of mass gatherings. Other programs target specific needs such as interventions to prevent illness from rabies, lead poisoning, failing septic systems, and sale of tobacco products to minors.
