Warren County Public Health Services works closely with physicians, health centers, and Glens Falls Hospital to consistently encourage and assure timely reporting of laboratory confirmed and-or clinically suspected cases of reportable communicable diseases. A Public Health Nurse follows up with clients either by telephone or home visits, to offer needed information to assure appropriate treatment of infected individuals and prevent exposure to contacts as appropriate, in order to protect the health of the public. The Rabies Prevention Program follows up on all animal bites-exposures, provides approval for rabies post exposure vaccination, approves rabies specimen testing, serves as a resource for providers and the community and offers rabies vaccination clinics for pets. All animal bites-exposures are mandated by Public Health law to be reported to the victim's county of residence. Tuberculosis PPD testing is offered by appointment to any Warren County resident requesting it.

Provides information and public awareness of West Nile Virus to the community, and educates residents to remove anything that might hold standing water tires, wheelbarrows, buckets, etc, and unremovable standing water which could create a mosquito breeding ground.

Also provides risk counseling for individuals at high risk for HIV infection in the Nassau County Community as well as the Nassau County Correction Center. Investigates animal and/or bat exposure and potential incidents and sends samples to the state laboratory for rabies confirmation. Staff assists individuals with treatment referrals. Provides a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats or ferrets each spring.

Offers services and testing for those who have HIV or an STI. Knowing your status helps you make health decisions to prevent getting or transmitting HIV or STIs. Treatment is available; it is important to start treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis to improve your overall health and decrease the risk of spreading illness to others. Confidential testing and treatment options are available at many local health care facilities, including community partners. Nassau County Department of Health offers services to persons with HIV or other STIs and their sexual or needle-sharing partners. Partner Services works with people to plan the best way to notify their sex and needle-sharing partners about their exposure to an STI or HIV. Partner Services is voluntary and confidential. In addition the Department of Health offers Ryan White HIV Services. The Ryan White Care Act is a federally funded grant to provide services for people living with HIV/AIDS in Nassau & Suffolk counties. Responsible for controlling mosquitoes, ticks and other arthropod infestations that are of public health importance. Suffolk County Residents can request mosquito control and/or notify of a mosquito issue. Call for detailed information.

Provides case management for childhood lead poisoning, diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, HIV testing and counseling, and immunizations for various diseases and illnesses.

Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. Provides seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccines, along with information and public awareness of the flu, how to prevent it, and what to do immediately if anyone comes in contact with someone with symptoms of the flu. The Seasonal Flu shot also includes the H1N1 strain. Please Note: Children under 18, pregnant women, or adults with chronic medical conditions should receive the vaccine from their primary doctors or obtain a prescription for the vaccines.
