Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. The department will answer all questions regarding rabies, raccoons, bats, ticks and more. Please report any sick or strange-acting mammals (except small rodents) observed at any time to the Nassau County Department of Health. Call for detailed information.

An outreach program to help improve and maintain personal health and environmental living conditions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy neighborhoods by keeping residents aware of the variety of medical, social and environmental services available to them locally. Outreach staff visit residents, at the residents request, an inspection of their home is also performed to be sure that no environmental health hazards or problems exist. If environmental health hazards or problems do exist, our staff will direct them to the agency best able to help.
Regulates and inspects the operation of public pools, beaches, and recreational spray grounds that are permitted by Nassau County Department of Health. Aims to prevent human rabies via the testing of suspect animals, the rabies vaccination of pets, the monitoring of biting animals, the monitoring of animals exposed to rabies, and the rabies vaccination of persons with known or suspected rabies exposure.
Eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment, but may also include chimney cleaning, minor repairs, installation of carbon monoxide detectors or programmable thermostats, if needed, to allow for the safe, proper and efficient operation of the heating equipment. Benefit amounts are based on the actual cost incurred to provide clean and tune services, up to a maximum of $500. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available. Protects soil and water resources by registering all petroleum tanks, conducting facility inspections, and assuring expedient remediation of petroleum contamination at PBS sites only.

DBCH offers a free tick identification service to the public that includes identification of the species, gender/life stage, estimate of feeding time and level of engorgement. The service also provides an official record of the identification that can be forwarded to a medical provider. Also provides information on Lyme's disease prevention and treatment.

Public water systems are routinely tested by both the public water supplier and the Nassau County Department of Health. Wells, treatment facilities, water storage tanks, and the distribution systems are tested for over 150 different contaminants. Your local water supplier handles complaints about rusty water or odors.
