Maintains town-owned landfill for registered carter dumping. Provides for hazardous waste dumping twice a year call for schedule. Facilitates communications between residents and carters.
Offers three major programs, the Toxic and Hazardous Material Storage Program, the Environmental Assessment and Remediation Program and the Swimming Pool Program. The registration, inspection, testing, permitting and closure of storage facilities containing toxic or hazardous liquids is the core responsibility of the Office of Pollution Control. The cleanup of contaminated storm drains, septic systems and leaching pools is completed in the OPC’s Remediation Program. The OPC inspects industrial sites and commercial establishments to verify compliance with Suffolk County Sanitary Code. The greatest threats to the county’s drinking water supply, gas stations and dry cleaners, are inspected on a more frequent basis. The OPC regulates most public swimming pools in Suffolk County. The office regularly inspects these pools for compliance with New York State and Suffolk County regulations. Call the Office of Pollution Control for services and programs offered.
