Offers Wildlife Advisory Telephone on wildlife related questions, care of sick/injured wildlife brought to Rehabilitation Center and educational programs at schools, libraries, and Education Centers. "Please note that due to a relocation, we are unable to admit wildlife patients for the remainder of 2024. We will reopen for rehabilitation as soon as possible in 2025. During this time, we are still available to provide advice how to help sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife. Controls certain water-bottom lands and ponds, roads, trails and beaches, issues boat mooring permits and leases on land in Lazy Point manages use of beach vehicles, and large assemblage on beaches (parties) and works with the Natural Resource Department and the Nature Conservancy toward the protection of endangered species.

We work to support birds and preserve local wildlife and their habitats on our unique and biodiverse North Fork, and beyond. We also host educational programs and hikes for adults, families and kids onsite, as well as at other locations.

Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. The department will answer all questions regarding rabies, raccoons, bats, ticks and more. Call for detailed information.

Grows seed clams, oysters and bay scallops for the enhancement/restoration of natural shellfish populations in local town and New York State waters. Offers public education on the importance of shellfish through facility and site tours. Also offers to the public oyster gardening opportunities.

Provides detailed environmental analysis of all proposed projects and makes specific recommendations to the Town Board. Develops and implements environmental improvement and protection projects including erosion control, wildlife habitat improvement, drainage projects, shellfish seeding programs, woodland restoration, and public awareness programs on the need for recycling.

Seeks to protect and preserve natural habitat which is home to a variety of plant and wildlife including waterfowl, osprey and white-tailed deer. Preserve also offers 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding (by annual permit), cross country skiing and nature trails, as well as fly fishing (with permit). The 32 mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the preserve. A museum and gift shop are also part of the preserve. Provides educational programming in commercial fisheries, seafood marketing, aquaculture, marine environmental issues, and fisheries technology.

Responds to any whale, porpoise, dolphin or sea turtle stranding on Long Island or in New York State. Provides medical care/assistance to live animals, and eventually releases them back into the wild when possible. Conducts post-mortems on dead animals, collects tissue samples for research/analysis and prepares skeletal remains for educational institutions. Operates stranding hotline and whale/seal/sea turtle adoption program. Publishes informational brochure.

Provides hiking, cross-country skiing, nature trails, fishing(freshwater and fly), refuge for wildlife, environmental educational programs and a place for people to develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural world. Events include junior angler fishing clinics and casting clinics.

Provides soil information, technical assistance on soil erosion and natural resource conservation. Tree and shrub seedling sale offered in spring for reforestation and wildlife plantings. Nesting boxes for birds and bat houses.

Offers educational, environmental, and natural resources programs that cover water quality, forestry, and land-use planning. Works to motivate people to properly plant and care for urban trees, protect waterways from pollution sources, and take part in land-use planning activities at the local level.
