ZOONOTIC DISEASES | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH - DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Investigates the control and the spread of mosquitoes through surveillance of mosquito breeding areas, preventing the development of adult mosquitoes, trapping adult mosquitoes, responding to complaints, treating infested areas and testing the trapped mosquitoes for presence of disease. Also Nassau County DOH investigates all reported animal bites. Nassau County Public Health law requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. This includes, but is not limited to, dogs, cats, and ferrets. Medical providers treating a person who has suffered an animal bite are required to report the incident to the Department. To report a bite incident, please call 516-227-9663 during normal business hours or 516-742-6154 after business hours and on weekends. The department will answer all questions regarding rabies, raccoons, bats, ticks and more. Call for detailed information.

CONNETQUOT RIVER STATE PARK PRESERVE | CONNETQUOT RIVER STATE PARK PRESERVE

Seeks to protect and preserve natural habitat which is home to a variety of plant and wildlife including waterfowl, osprey and white-tailed deer. Preserve also offers 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding (by annual permit), cross country skiing and nature trails, as well as fly fishing (with permit). The 32 mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail passes through the preserve. A museum and gift shop are also part of the preserve. MARINE MAMMAL AND SEA TURTLE STRANDING PROGRAM OF NEW YORK | MARINE MAMMAL AND SEA TURTLE STRANDING PROGRAM OF NEW YORK

Responds to any whale, porpoise, dolphin or sea turtle stranding on Long Island or in New York State. Provides medical care/assistance to live animals, and eventually releases them back into the wild when possible. Conducts post-mortems on dead animals, collects tissue samples for research/analysis and prepares skeletal remains for educational institutions. Operates stranding hotline and whale/seal/sea turtle adoption program. Publishes informational brochure.

Offers Wildlife Advisory Telephone on wildlife related questions, care of sick/injured wildlife brought to Rehabilitation Center and educational programs at schools, libraries, and Education Centers. "Please note that due to a relocation, we are unable to admit wildlife patients for the remainder of 2024. We will reopen for rehabilitation as soon as possible in 2025. During this time, we are still available to provide advice how to help sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife. Morton National, Conscience Point National, Lido Beach National, Seatuck National, Oyster Bay National, Amagansett National, and Sayville National.
