MCGRUFF THE CRIME DOG | RIVERHEAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Offers children in first and second-grade important personal safety lessons while getting them actively involved in the learning process. The McGruff Program seeks to give children the social tools they need to recognize bullying behavior, prevent it from occurring and handle it effectively when confronted with a tough situation whether on the playground, the bus, the lunchroom or playing in the neighborhood. GROUNDWATER PROTECTION | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Involved in many programs to prevent subsurface discharges that have the potential to threaten our groundwater resources. They include the Petroleum Bulk Storage program, Toxic and Hazardous Materials Storage Program, Sewer Connection Program and closure of On-Site Sanitary Systems, monitoring inactive hazardous waste sites and the Underground Injection Control program (UIC). Nassau County has initiated a septic system replacement program for residents and small businesses -- Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC). The SEPTIC program will provide grant funding to eligible recipients to replace a conventional or failing septic system with an innovative and alternative onsite wastewater treatment system. Nassau County is offering grants up to $20,000 for homeowners or small businesses to install state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing septic systems. TEMPORARY RESIDENCES | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Provides fire safety and sanitary control over motels and hotels. It also inspects and monitors campgrounds, mobile home parks, and mass gatherings. To secure a Temporary Residence permit for an existing establishment, you must submit a completed application, appropriate fee, and supporting documentation. Prior to construction or renovation of a Temporary Residence, the operator must submit plans and applications for review to this Department. Please call for detailed information.

HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HEAP) | NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

Federally funded program designed to help low-income households meet the high cost of home energy. Both those who pay separately for heating costs and households whose heat is included in their rent may be eligible for a one time regular benefit. Additionally, households with a heating emergency may also be eligible for an emergency benefit and and/or a Heating Equipment Repair/Replacement (HERR) benefit. The HEAP year generally begins in mid-November and closes in mid-March or when the program funding is exhausted. There is also a Clean and Tune benefit, which provide energy efficiency services to eligible households prior to the start of the heating season. Such Services may include the cleaning of primary heating equipment, minor repairs, installation of carbon monoxide detector, etc. A cooling component that assists medically needy households with the purchase of air conditioners may also be available during the warmer months. Most benefits are paid directly to the heating/utility vendor. The income guidelines and benefits amounts are subject to change on a yearly basis. Applications for Regular HEAP may be submitted online at myBenefits during the HEAP season.
