A federally funded grant program designed to help families stay safe from lead. Homes built prior to 1978 could contain lead-based paint. When small children are exposed to lead it can cause behavioral problems, damage to organs, and learning problems. Homeowners and renters in Niagara Falls and Lockport may qualify for free or low-cost lead-based paint control and housing improvements. Potential items that qualify include replacement windows, replacement doors, fresh paint, aluminum trim, and more. Application to this program is open to any household with a child under 6 (either living in the home or frequently visiting). Assistance is available to determine if applicants meet the income and eligibility requirements. Rental property owners are encouraged to apply as well.

Provides the information and tools that families, homeowners, and property owners need to prevent children from being exposed to dangerous lead hazards. Program comprises two parts: The Lead Poisoning Primary Prevention Grant Program (Lead Primary) and Lead Poisoning Primary Prevention Initiative (Primary Initiative). Lead Primary activities are focused in neighborhoods that have been identified as "communities of concern" where children are at highest risk for lead poisoning. Activities are carried out in 1, 2, 3 or 4 unit family homes in zip codes identified as "Communities of Concern" for lead poisoning (see eligibility for specific zip codes). "Areas of High Risk" within these zip codes are identified to receive a concentrated intervention. Each home in the "area of high risk" receives a full exterior inspection, and in some cases, an interior inspection and a lead education visit for the occupant. Repairs, utilizing lead safe work practices, must be made to any identified lead hazards. The Primary Initiative is a county-wide program available in all areas of Erie County. Families with young children who want information about lead poisoning prevention can request an assessment of their pre-1978 home. A visual exterior and interior inspection by staff will identify any potential lead hazards and a lead education visit with the family will provide cleaning supplies and strategies for avoiding lead hazards. Repairs, utilizing lead safe work practices, must be made to any identified lead hazards. Program also provides: - Free training on how to conduct "Lead Safe Work Practices" (LSWP) when doing repairs or remodeling in the home; see website for class schedule and registration. - Free materials and supplies for doing the required work "lead safe" after taking the LSWP course; - Referrals to additional resources and programs available for lead poisoning prevention; - Training for agencies, municipalities, and community organizations.

Provides education and support in areas of disease and injury prevention. Areas may include nutrition, dental health in children, STDs, worksite wellness, HIV/AIDS, cancer screening and education, teen pregnancy, family planning, lead poisoning prevention, physical activity, communicable and chronic diseases, rabies control, tobacco use prevention and cessation, and car seat safety.

Serves as a liaison for and facilitator of emergency response training. Provides emergency response information both during an emergency as well as planning, mitigation and recovery from disasters. Administers various federal and state grants in the areas of emergency response.

Provides information about how to keep children safe from lead poisoning where they live, learn, and play. Services include: Education, screening services, and information about making homes safe.

* Interacts with both public and private organizations and provides services such as: Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.). Child abuse education. Bicycle safety. Child fingerprinting. Adult fingerprinting. Crime prevention. Neighborhood watch. Personal safety. School Resource Officer Program (SRO) assigned to Auburn Schools and a one-on-one approach to community neighborhood problems.

Provides information and service for Forest Rangers, Forestry, Operations, Pesticides, Spill Prevention and Response, Wildlife

Promotes fire safety in Hamilton County. Provides fire investigation, fire prevention programs, hazardous materials incident mitigation, technical training, and public relations for fire departments in Hamilton County.

Collaborates with partners throughout the county to conserve and build water, soil and other natural resources.

Collaborates with towns and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to conserve soil and water resources throughout Schuyler County.

Provides various services for the senior residents of Steuben County including, but not limited to, information and referral, nutrition programs, caregiver support services, health insurance information and counseling including long term care information, advocacy services, and transportation help. Offers various workshops and outreach programs.

Trained nutrition staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension provide a series of nutrition lessons intended to address the challenges faced by low income families. Sessions are typically scheduled once per week for 6-8 weeks at a variety of locations across the county and are provided free of charge to low-income families and youth. Sessions involve a variety of interactive, hands-on activities, food preparation and tasting, and discussions to address the concerns of families. Topics addressed in these sessions are adapted to meet the needs of the individuals in the group. Some examples of the topics discussed at these sessions include: - How to make the most of limited food dollars - Hands-on food preparation of healthy snacks and meals - Recipe modification - The importance of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle - Ideas for increasing fruits and vegetables in meals and snacks - Food safety

Provides education, monitoring, case follow up, environmental investigation, nutrition, and developmental screening for children with elevated lead levels. Information regarding lead poisoning is available for the general community.

Provides health information and referrals through telephone counseling by registered nurses. Call for free health information or assistance including free health information, physician and service referrals, program registration information, disease management assistance, post-discharge support for patients and families, pre-procedure instructions for diagnostic testing, follow-up for health screens and post-discharge care management for open-heart patients, including patient education and assistance with medications.

Provides smoke detectors and free installation to individuals in the community.

Offers referrals to parents seeking registered child care provider information. Also provides information regarding regulated child care and child care subsidy funds to parents. Provides regulatory over site of registered day care/child care programs, support and guidance of registration and application process and assisting child care providers with training and technical assistance. Administers the CACFP program which provides nutrition and meal planning education services and meal reimbursement to family day care providers.

Dispatches police, fire and medical personnel in emergency situations, to aid those that reside in the community.

Offers regularly scheduled rabies clinics throughout the county for cats, dogs and ferrets. Also provides information and follow up for humans or pets that have experienced an animal bite or possible rabies exposure. If bitten by or encountered a wild or domestic animal that could have rabies, call Public Health or seek health care.
