Educates Nassau and Suffolk County homeowners on the importance of maintaining an energy efficient and healthy home. At no cost to the homeowner, the program arranges for a certified Long Island professional to conduct a comprehensive "Healthy Home Energy Assessment" to identify any efficiency or health and safety issues in the home. This may include water leaks, injury or environmental hazards, pests, and heating, plumbing and electrical deficiencies. Following the assessment, the homeowner will be referred to appropriate resources that are available through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on Long Island.

The American Red Cross is making homes safer through the Home Fire Campaign. With the help of local volunteers and partners, we’re installing FREE smoke alarms in homes that don’t have them or need updated alarms (10 yr battery life) as well as educating people about fire safety. We can install as many alarms as needed in your home! Please call to make an appointment.

Also enforces the state and local building codes, housing standards and ordinances, to the review of applications for permits of new buildings, repairs, alterations, signs, and rooming houses, in addition to electrical and plumbing work. The building department accepts complaints from tenants about conditions the landlord fails to resolve.

Benefit amounts are based on the actual cost incurred to repair or replace your furnace, boiler, and/or other essential heating equipment, $4,000 for a repair and $8,000 for a replacement. Conducts investigations of lead poisoning in children. Because lead poisoning is serious, New York State requires Health Care Providers to test all children for blood lead levels at ages 1 and 2, and up to age 6 based on risk assessment. Contact the Suffolk County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program to find out about home safety tools and recalls on items and toys, especially if your home was built before 1978. Offers community outreach and education about lead poisoning and prevention to health providers and various homes and organizations. Call for all services offered.
