Offers a special education high school focusing on students’ social, emotional, vocational, and academic needs. The general instructional program includes both individual and cooperative learning strategies. Individual and small group counseling services are provided for each student as mandated by the IEP. Students have the option to participate in vocational/work-based programs in food preparation, automotive technology, and woodshop. Students can be enrolled in college courses provided through SUNY Farmingdale State College while meeting their high school requirements. Students earn a Regents or Local Diploma and are also offered the opportunity to earn the Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential. CPHS has been associated through the years with Hofstra University and Nassau Community College. At these locations students are exposed to college life with support and supervision provided by Nassau BOCES staff. Students can earn college credit at Nassau Community College and have access to various opportunities on campus. At Hofstra University, students have the opportunity to attend their high school classes on campus and receive practical work experience in various areas on campus. The program offers the Rebound Program. This is a more restrictive setting, which consists of 6:1:2 classrooms, offering a flexible curriculum combined with counseling. CPHS also offers the Individualized Learning Academy. The Individualized Learning Academy is a half-day, three-hour program specially geared for students with emotional disturbances who demonstrate severe challenging behaviors and require a shortened day with individualized instruction. Provides comprehensive educational services for students with multiple disabilities including students with physical and developmental impairments as well as students with autism spectrum disorders, aged 5 to 21. All students are placed in small ratio classes allowing for a true individualized learning experience. Multiple methodologies of teaching are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology to provide stimulating educational experiences for all students. Language, academic readiness, social competence and activities of daily living are taught within a structured, aided language classroom environment. Students enjoy hands on learning practicing on classmates, mannequins and clinic clients as they study hairstyling, coloring, perms and relaxers, make-up techniques, manicures and business practices. Successful completion of the Cosmetology program at Western Suffolk BOCES prepares you to sit for the New York State Cosmetology licensing exam and includes Hair Extensions certification. The School of Practical Nursing at Western Suffolk BOCES is approved by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. BOCES’ program offers a low student-to-teacher ratio that allows many opportunities for highly personalized, hands-on instruction. The School prepares students to work with patients and medical staff in medical facilities including nursing homes. Students are then assigned to a clinical site at one of Long Island’s excellent health care facilities where they work under the guidance of an experienced health care professional. Classes are held at Wilson Technological Center’s Northport campus. Those who successfully complete the New York State-approved Practical Nursing program at BOCES meet the qualifications for admission to the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN).
