Gifted Education
Offers gifted students programs and courses for those who need stimulation, focus, encouragement, and room to experiment and engage in self-directed activities. If your child is gifted or academically advanced, you can provide a motivating, positive learning environment and the enrichment he or she needs to thrive. The Gifted Academy at Hofstra enables you to expand the scope of learning and creative experiences provided by your child's school. Students entering Kindergarten through Grade 8 will be challenged and stimulated through subjects such as Math, Science, Arts, and Humanities. Each semester, course offerings are expanded in response to parental and student input. Working closely with other gifted students within their age group, your young one will have the opportunity to be exposed to other gifted children and to forge strong bonds of friendship. Children who demonstrate intellectual abilities above their peers and age-appropriate classmates benefit enormously academically, socially, and emotionally when exposed to challenging and enriching curricula. Call for more detailed information.

Elementary Schools
Committed to the development of the intellectual potential of gifted children. It brings together two important elements of education for the gifted: extraordinary teachers recruited from leading high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in the metropolitan area and university-level facilities. These two factors, combined with an administrative and psychological team schooled in the needs of gifted children, give the Long Island University program unique strengths in producing positive benefits for young people admitted to the program. The Center for Gifted Youth's underlying philosophy should be understood by all considering its program for their children. The Center is committed to the development of the intellectual potential of each child. Its purpose is to provide learning experiences for children with superior intellectual ability that will deepen and extend their intellectual interests, as well as develop the skills of independent learning. Classes are taught at a faster pace and in greater depth than in most schools. The program is designed to augment programs in local schools. In addition, the Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth is aware of the role of parents in ensuring the success of their children. To help parents with this task, a number of services are offered. Parents may enroll in a variety of workshops, which are scheduled to run concurrently with the regularly held sessions of the youngsters. Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth has two psychologists on staff who lead these workshops, which are designed to allow an exchange of information and perceptions about the responsibilities, challenges, problems and joys of raising gifted children. Past meetings have included such topics as school problems, enrichment alternatives, the social and emotional factors of being gifted and sibling rivalry. Participation in all workshops and meetings is voluntary and provided at no extra fee. The psychologists are also available to meet with parents on an individual basis to discuss specific concerns. Classroom observations by the psychologists and input from the instructional staff are a useful part of this process. Call for information regarding admission procedures. An application is required.
