Also provides eviction prevention grants to renters, and relocation help for the homeless based on completing application and providing documents. If help cannot be provided then a referral can be made for assistance from another agency.

Offers legal assistance in the following areas: - Disability: Offers disability rights services and legal advice/representation to developmentally disabled individuals and others. - Family Problems: Provides assistance with kinship custody and assistance for victims of domestic violence. - Housing Problems: * Until further notice, the Housing Unit can only provide assistance with ERAP application issues and illegal lockout emergencies (ex: landlord changed locks, stopped a utility, etc. without going to court); cannot assist with any other housing-related issues at this time.* Typically helps tenants who are facing eviction or who have been locked out of their apartments. Helps people who are applying for public or subsidized housing who have been denied, or tenants in public or subsidized housing who are worried about losing their subsidy or who have questions about how their rent has been calculated. Helps tenants whose landlords are not making necessary repairs and who are forced to live under unsafe or hazardous conditions. Also provides legal assistance and advocacy to people who have encountered discrimination while looking for housing, or during their tenancy. - Entitlements Advocacy: Assists tenants with welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI, and utilities.

Assists individuals and families who are at risk of homelessness due to an eviction notice or utility issues or help in avoiding foreclosure. Services include landlord mediation, utility company mediation, referrals, access to safe and affordable transitional housing. Households are counseled on restructuring debt, establishing reinstatement plans, foreclosure prevention strategies, loan forbearance, management of household finances, obtaining rental subsidies, landlord and renter rights, the eviction process and locating alternative housing. Financial assistance also consists of security deposit assistance, rent payment assistance, and assistance with back utilities and back rent. Transitional housing is located in Almond and is only for individuals or families who are facing homelessness.

The Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) offers individuals facing eviction across Westchester, Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. direct representation and advice regardless of immigration status. HVJC will prioritize cases where clients are ineligible for other rental assistance programs.
The Housing programs help people with a variety of housing goals and needs. For some clients, keeping their home and avoiding foreclosure is a challenge. We can help via our foreclosure prevention counseling, where we look for programs that help people keep their homes. Others may be preparing to buy a home for the first time, and we can help them too with our pre-purchase counseling and Essentials for Buying your First Home program. We also offer reverse mortgage counseling, rental counseling, and a few other services, programs, and educational opportunities.

Offers shelter placements and assistance with emergency housing needs through the Department of Social Services (DSS) under the auspices of the Nassau County Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD). Eligible individuals and families can, on an emergency, temporary basis be assisted with shelter and other items of need in order to meet their emergency. The goal is to provide families and individuals with the tools they need to secure a permanent, stable housing, and move as quickly as possible to a stable self-sufficient role in the community. In addition DSS offers assistance to a family or individual who is threatened with eviction or foreclosure, assistance may be available to save the current housing. These emergency programs are: Emergency Assistance to Adults; Emergency Assistance to Families and Emergency Safety Net Assistance. These programs were designed to meet one-time non-recurrent emergency situations. These benefits do have specific eligibility requirements, and each case receives the attention of a worker with specialized knowledge in this area. Applications for eligibility should be made at Department of Social Services as soon as the potential problem becomes known.
