Assists and advises debtors in representing themselves in court and filing all the necessary court paperwork related to debt. Program can help people who may have collections issues, wage garnishments, frozen bank accounts, debt court cases or judgments related to credit card debts, medical debts, student loans, car loans, utilities collections, lines of credit, charge accounts, and foreclosures.

LEGAL SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY | DUTCHESS COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING

A Legal Services Program funded by the Dutchess County Office for the Aging is designed to provide legal advice to Dutchess County residents age 60 and over.

SENIOR CITIZENS LAW PROGRAM | TOURO LAW CENTER

Program provides pro bono legal services to senior citizens, age 60+, residing in Suffolk County. Services are not income-based, although there is an effort to serve the needy, low-income and underserved populations. Under the supervision of the Senior Staff Attorney and the Staff Attorney, the SCLP handles several types of cases. These include Landlord-Tenant, Section 8 and subsidized housing matters, preparation of Powers of Attorney/Health Care Proxies/Living Wills, Medicaid applications and Pooled Trust applications. The SCLP also provides representation at Medicaid Fair hearings, in Town Zoning Violations matters, and in Small Claims Court cases. Representation is provided by upper-level law students, working under the close supervision of experienced lawyers who are clinical professors. There is no charge for clinic representation. However, the clinics have limited resources and cannot take every case, no matter how deserving. Clinic staff members meet with potential clients by appointment only. Please do not visit the Law Center unless you have first contacted the Office of Clinical Programs at 631-761-7080 to see if you are eligible.

LEGAL SERVICES | LEGAL ACTION CENTER

* LAC provides free legal services to eligible New York residents who need help related to:
  • Discrimination because of a criminal record. Includes assistance finding and correcting mistakes on rap sheets and commercial background checks, certificates of rehabilitation, filing employment discrimination complaints, gathering evidence of rehabilitation, and more.
  • Discrimination because of an alcohol/drug history. Includes assistance for individuals who have who face discrimination for participating in medication-assisted treatment or medication, such as methadone, buprenorphine (Suboxone), or naltrexone (Vivitrol), to treat their opiate addiction.
  • Discrimination for people living with HIV/AIDS. Includes breach of HIV confidentiality or testing rights. Also helps with problems such as health care proxies, living wills, and permanency planning.
