Advocates for quality, affordable and accessible child care in legislation and public policy for children and families. The Council collaborated and works with other child care organizations and community groups, school, etc. to education about and support high-quality child care.

Provides various formats of networking through events and programs to enhance business to build the community. Also advocates for legislation which affects different aspects of business, such as worker compensation, small business health insurance, etc.

Responsible for developing new ways to improve the delivery of supports and services to New Yorkers with developmental disabilities and their families. Focus is on increased opportunities for consumers to become involved in the community, secure education, employment and housing. Comprised of volunteers appointed by the Governor, council meets quarterly to identify and discuss current issues.

Advocate at the local, state, and federal levels to improve standards for low-wage workers including efforts to increase wage rates, provide equal access to identification for immigrant residents, and advocate for the rights of workers in specific industries that lack adequate protections.

Advocates to change public policy and legislation for better housing for those with limited incomes. Also works with other organizations by creating forums and coalitions to advocate and educate legislators and other agencies on affordable housing-related issues.

Provides support for individuals with disabilities as they improve their ability to speak up for themselves and obtain the respect, access, and services they deserve in their daily lives and communities. SILO also assists with voter registration, facilitates action groups designed to make community change, and coordinates disability-related political action alerts. For the community at large, SILO provides technical assistance and resources to businesses and agencies to help them improve their accessibility for people with disabilities and their compliance with civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act. When people come to SILO, they become active in the community as part of the solution.

Provides information and referral, networking and advocacy regarding head injury to ensure access to all medical, residential, vocational and social systems, case management, support groups for survivors, family members and spouses/significant others in two locations, and public and professional awareness through educational in-service programs, publications, legislative advocacy and lobbying.

Advocate for children and families in the community, and getting everyone to speak out about the need to pass legislation that prevents abuse and protects children, and encourages the public to get involved by contacting state legislators and urge them to act on specific child abuse prevention measures.

Supports the passage and enforcement of laws or other social measures that protect the rights of people who have physical, mental, developmental or learning disabilities. Works to maximize their ability to enjoy the same opportunities, resources and privileges as the mainstream population.

Provides education and public awareness to the community about domestic violence, through community speakers, interviews, conducting workshops, sending letters, legislative lobbying, etc.
