Silver Alerts
Offers a free program which enables relatives or caregivers to register persons with special needs in the Police Department’s database. This information will be furnished to first responders and police officers responding to an emergency situation involving the registrant. Special Needs/Silver Alert program is designed for people with: Dementia (including Alzheimer’s Disease); Developmental Disabilities (including Autism Spectrum, Mental Retardation/Mental Impairment); Severe Mental Illness and Other cognitive disorders that may impair reasoning, resulting in a person wandering or being disoriented/lost. Registrants can also request to receive an identification bracelet by checking the box on the Special Needs/Silver Alert Registry form. The bracelet is free of charge and contains a distinctive I.D. number as well as a Suffolk County Police Department phone number which first responders can utilize to obtain information regarding that person. Call for additional information.

- Preparation and electronic distribution of DCJS Missing Child/College Student and Missing Adult Alerts statewide. LOCATER (Lost Child Alert Technology Resource), Xpedite, and NY Alert allow for repaid distribution of photographic images and biographical information within minutes
- Placement of missing child and vulnerable adult photographs and biographical information on the DCJS and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) web sites
- Development and distribution of printed missing child posters statewide
- Co-coordination of statewide implementation and operation of the NYS AMBER Alert Program, which provides law enforcement agencies with a mechanism for rapid and widespread public dissemination of information in the event of a child abduction
- Administration of the statewide missing/unidentified person repository (mandated "flagging" missing child birth and educational records is facilitated through the use of this data)
- Analysis, transcription, and entry of dental and anatomical information into DCJS and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) files on behalf of law enforcement agencies and medical examiners
- Collaboration with NCMEC and other state clearinghouses
- Presentation of investigative training programs for law enforcement officers, along with development and dissemination of investigative procedures and guides
- Furthering investigative and educational efforts instituted pursuant to the US Department of Justice funded NYS Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program
- Development and distribution of child safety literature
- Ongoing community outreach, including presentations about child and Internet safety to various groups and organizations
